Eungella protects the longest continuous stretch of subtropical rainforest in Australia, on the Clarke Range west of Mackay. Entry is free, there is no gate and no shuttle: you drive up the range road yourself, and everything worth seeing sits along a 15 km stretch of that road. The park is famous for one thing above all — platypuses that can be watched from a platform at Broken River in daylight, which is unusual anywhere in the world. Come for a day from Mackay, or sleep at Broken River and have the platform to yourself at dawn.

Accessibility
- The Broken River picnic area, platypus platform and Sky Window lookout are reached by sealed road with short, level paths from the car park.
- The rainforest loop and Fern Flat walk are unsurfaced with roots and steps; not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers.
- No public transport, shuttle or taxi serves the park; a private vehicle is required.
Visiting lightly
- Keep to the platform and tracks around Broken River — bank-side trampling damages platypus burrows.
- Do not feed or lure wildlife, including the bush turkeys and possums around the picnic areas.
- Take all rubbish back down the range; there are no bins at the campgrounds.
- Buy fuel and food in Eungella or Mirani so the valley towns keep a stake in the park.

How much does it cost to enter Eungella National Park?
Nothing. Queensland national parks have no entry fee, and there is no gate, ticket booth or parking charge at Eungella. The only costs are fuel, your own food, and the camping fee if you stay overnight — a small per-person nightly charge booked online in advance (2026 estimate).
What are the best hikes in Eungella National Park?
For most visitors the Sky Window circuit (1–1.5 h, easy) and the Broken River rainforest loop (1–2 h, easy) are the two to do. Add the Fern Flat walk (2–3 h return, moderate) if you want a longer, quieter route up the creek. All are signed and none need a guide.
When is the best time to visit Eungella National Park?
May to August: dry tracks, clear skies and cool nights, with the platypus platform at its most comfortable. April and September are also good. Avoid January to March, when the range road can flood and close and the longer walks turn to mud.
Can I see a platypus at Eungella?
Yes, and it is the main reason people come. Watch from the platform at Broken River in the first two hours after dawn or the last two before dark. Stay still, keep quiet, and look for a V-shaped ripple rather than the animal itself.
Do I need a 4WD to reach Eungella?
No. The Mackay–Eungella road and the park access roads are sealed and fine for a normal car. You do need your own vehicle, because no bus, tour or train runs to the park.
Is there anywhere to eat or stay in the park?
There are no cafes or shops in the park itself — bring food and water. Eungella township, 10–15 minutes away, has a small shop and pub, and the park has two walk-in campgrounds that must be booked online.
