Bandelier National Monument protects ancestral Puebloan homes cut into soft volcanic tuff on the Pajarito Plateau, in Frijoles Canyon and on the mesas above it. The visitor centre, the 1.6 km Pueblo Loop Trail, the cliff dwellings and Alcove House all sit in one canyon reached by a steep paved road; in summer that road closes to cars from 9:00 to 15:00 and a free shuttle runs from White Rock. Beyond the loop, the Bandelier Wilderness opens into mesa-top trails to Frijolito Ruin, Alamo Canyon, Stone Lions Shrine and Capulin Canyon, with free permits for overnight trips. Tsankawi, a separate mesa-top pueblo site off NM-4, is covered by the same entrance fee.

What are the best hikes in Bandelier National Monument?

The 1.6 km Pueblo Loop Trail is the essential walk past the cliff dwellings. Add Alcove House for the ladder climb, the Frey Trail for canyon views, or the 5 km round trip to Upper Frijoles Falls. The Stone Lions Shrine is a full-day or overnight backcountry route.

When is the best time to visit Bandelier National Monument?

April, May, September and October give mild temperatures, clear skies and smaller crowds. Summer is hot with afternoon monsoon storms, and June can bring fire closures. Winter is cold and quiet, with ice on trails.

Do I need a reservation or permit?

No permit for day hiking or the loop trail. Overnight backpacking needs a free permit from the visitor center. In summer, Frijoles Canyon closes to cars from 9:00 to 15:00 and you ride the free shuttle from White Rock.

Can I drive into Frijoles Canyon in summer?

Only before 9:00 or after 15:00. Between those hours, park at the White Rock Visitor Center on NM-4 and take the free shuttle to the visitor center.

Are the Alcove House ladders open?

They have been closed at times, so check at the visitor center before counting on the climb. The trail to the cave stays open either way.
