Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park is the caldera of the old Tengger volcano in East Java: a 10 km-wide floor of volcanic sand, the smoking cone of Mount Bromo, the dormant Mount Batok, and behind them Mount Semeru, Java's highest peak at 3,676 m. The Tenggerese, a Hindu community of about 600,000 people in some 30 villages, farm the rim and keep the Poten temple in the sand sea. Almost everyone arrives for one pre-dawn jeep run to a viewpoint and a walk up the crater stair, which is why the park gets more than 500,000 visitors a year, about 95 percent of them domestic. Semeru is a separate, permit-only climb from Ranupani and is closed for weeks from January and whenever the alert level rises.

Public bus or green minibus to Ngadisari and Cemoro Lawang, or a taxi; the road climbs 40 km (25 mi) from Ketapang.

When is the best time to visit Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park?

April to October, with April, May and October the sweet spot: dry, clear mornings and fewer visitors. June to September is dry but busy, especially August. November to March is the wet season, and January and February bring flooding and landslips that close tracks.

Do I need a guide or a jeep?

No for the crater and the viewpoints — you can walk from Cemoro Lawang. Yes in practice for a pre-dawn sunrise run, because the roads are dark and the official jeep service (about Rp350,000 for two stops) is the licensed option. Semeru always needs a permit and a guide.

Can I climb Mount Semeru?
