Ella is a small hill town at the southern edge of Sri Lanka's Hill Country, in Uva province, built around one main street of guest houses, cafés and shops. People come for three walks (Little Adam's Peak, Nine Arch Bridge, Ella Rock), tea estates and the train ride in or out. Two nights covers the walks; three lets you add a tea factory or a slow day. The town itself is tiny, so most of your time is spent on trails, in tea fields or on a scooter.

Getting around
The centre is walkable in 10 minutes. Tuk-tuks are everywhere for short hops; scooters can be rented through many guest houses and are the fastest way to reach trailheads and waterfalls. Trains and buses leave from the main road. Distances to trailheads are short but uphill.

Watch out
Safety
- Tuk-tuk drivers may steer you to the wrong bus platform or a longer route to Nine Arch Bridge: walk the Passara Road route or the track instead.
- Ella Rock trails are re-cut by locals and guidebooks go stale; use an offline OpenStreetMap app and stay on marked footpaths.
- Leeches appear on trails and in tea fields after heavy rain; wear covered shoes and long socks.
- Afternoon rain is normal most of the year; start walks early.
- Rail services on the hill line have been disrupted since late 2025 — confirm before relying on a train.
