Point Nepean is the tip of the Mornington Peninsula: low limestone cliffs, ocean beach on one side, sheltered Port Phillip on the other, and a headland full of military and quarantine history. Fort Nepean fired the first Allied shot of World War I and the first Australian shot of World War II. The Quarantine Station above it is the second-oldest intact quarantine station in Australia. Walking is the point — the fort walk is flat and paved, the ocean beach walk is sand and stairs. There is no entry fee and no camping; you sleep in Portsea or Sorrento.

Nothing. Entry and parking are free. You pay only if you use the seasonal shuttle to Fort Nepean (about A$12–15 return, 2026 estimate) or join a guided Quarantine Station tour (about A$10–25, 2026 estimate).

What are the best hikes in Point Nepean National Park?

The Fort Nepean walk is the main one: about 4 km each way on a sealed road from the Quarantine Station to the gun emplacements, flat and easy. The Quarantine Station loop is a short 1–1.5 h walk through the 1850s buildings and cemetery. Outside the gate, the London Bridge Lookout and Sierra Nevada Rocks walk is 30–45 min on cliff-top paths.

When is the best time to visit Point Nepean National Park?

March to May and October to November: mild, usually dry and quieter. Summer (December to February) is warm but the car park fills by 10:00 and the fort road has no shade. Winter is cold and windy, though June to September is when whales are seen offshore.

Do I need to book to visit Point Nepean?

No. There is no entry fee or booking for the park. Book ahead only for guided Quarantine Station tours, and check whether the shuttle is running on the day you go.

Can I camp at Point Nepean?

No. There is no camping in the park. Sleep in Portsea or Sorrento, 5–15 minutes away, or in the larger peninsula towns 30–45 minutes back up the road.

Can I swim at Point Nepean?

Not on the ocean side. The Bass Strait beach has strong rips and no lifeguards. Sheltered bay beaches near Sorrento and Portsea are the swimming option.
