Watarrka protects Kings Canyon, a 100 m-deep gorge cut into a sandstone plateau of domed formations, about halfway between Alice Springs and Uluru on the Red Centre loop. The Luritja people have lived here for thousands of years and several sites in the canyon remain sacred. There is no entry fee and no accommodation inside the park; everything runs from Kings Canyon Resort, 7 km from the trailhead.

What are the best hikes in Watarrka National Park?
The 7 km Rim Walk is the main one: a steep climb, then a one-way loop along the cliff tops with a side trip to the Garden of Eden, taking 3–5 hours. The 2.6 km King Creek walk on the canyon floor is the easy alternative, and Kathleen Springs is a short flat trail at the western end. The 22 km Giles Track is for fit, prepared walkers and needs registration.
When is the best time to visit Watarrka National Park?
April to September. Days are mild and dry, and the Rim Walk is comfortable if you start early. From November to March daytime temperatures pass 40°C and the rim walk may be closed; if you visit then, walk King Creek at dawn and be off the trails by mid-morning.
Can I camp inside Watarrka National Park?
No. Overnight camping is forbidden in the park. The nearest options are Kings Canyon Resort, 7 km from the trailhead, and Kings Creek Station about 36 km away; both take tents and have cabins.
How do I get to Watarrka National Park?
By road only. It is 4–5 hours from Alice Springs and 3–4 hours from Uluṟu via the Lasseter and Luritja roads, all sealed. A 4WD can use the Ernest Giles Road or the Mereenie Loop from Glen Helen, which needs a day permit. Tours and day trips run from Alice Springs.
Can I swim in the Garden of Eden?
No. The waterhole often carries high bacterial levels, so do not swim in it and do not drink the water. Treat it as a viewpoint and a photo stop on the Rim Walk.
