Khiva is a small oasis city in the Khorezm region of western Uzbekistan. Its walled inner town, Itchan Kala, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and can be seen on foot in a day. It is far from Samarkand and Bukhara, so it needs a dedicated leg by train, road or a flight to Urgench. One night, arriving in the afternoon and leaving after sunrise, is enough for most travelers; two nights suits photographers and slow walkers.

Getting around

Itchan Kala is compact and walkable. The nearest airport is Urgench (UGC), about 35 km away; taxis and a rail link to Urgench and Khiva connect (check the operator for current schedules). Taxis from Urgench cost about UZS 150,000–250,000 (2026 estimate); the rail-station-to-old-town transfer is short.

Safety

Khiva is a low-crime, small tourist town; the main risks are heat in summer, cold in winter and long transfers. Check your own government's travel advice before you go.
  • No airport in Khiva itself; plan the transfer from Urgench and add the time to your schedule.
  • Summer heat is severe: the old town has little shade, so visit at sunrise and late afternoon.
  • A combined ticket covers many monuments but not all; check what it includes and how long it lasts before you buy.
  • Some minarets and towers charge separately for climbing; check at the gate.
  • Winter nights are freezing, and many guesthouses close or heat poorly from December to February.
