Nahanni protects the South Nahanni River (Naha Dehé) and four canyons cut up to 1,000 m deep through the Mackenzie Mountains, about 500 km west of Yellowknife. There are no public roads: you arrive by floatplane or on foot, and most visitors see only the stretch from Virginia Falls (Nailicho) downstream. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, a national park reserve on Dene land, and one of the least-visited parks in Canada.

June to August. July and August are warmest, with temperatures from 0°C to 30°C and frost possible at night late in the season. June has long days and higher water. The river begins icing in September, and there is no practical visitor access from October to May.
