Mount Merbabu is a 3,142 m volcano in Central Java, protected as a national park in 2004 and split between the regencies of Boyolali, Magelang and Semarang. There is no road to the top and no cable car: every route is a night climb on foot from one of four village base camps — Thekelan and Wekas above Kopeng on the north side, Suwanting near Ketep Pass in Magelang, and Selo in Boyolali. The forest climbs from pine and Schima at 1,000–1,500 m through acacia and Casuarina to grass and Javanese edelweiss above 2,400 m, and the summit ridge looks straight across to Merapi, with Sumbing, Sindoro, Telomoyo and Ungaran on the horizon. The park office sits in Boyolali and the trails are managed with the villages that host the trailheads, so registration, guiding and portering are local. This page covers fees and registration, the four trails, the dry-season window, and the rules — no red or green clothing, no defecating at Watu Gubug or the crater — that come with a mountain the surrounding communities treat as sacred.

Why go

  • A 3,142 m volcano you can summit on foot in one night, with Merapi smoking across the saddle.
  • Four separate trailheads on different sides, so you can pick your approach and your descent.
  • Sub-alpine grassland and Javanese edelweiss above 2,400 m, pine and acacia forest below.
  • Cheap compared with Java's other volcano hikes: base-camp guesthouses and warungs cost little.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to enter Mount Merbabu National Park?

Expect roughly Rp20,000–50,000 per person on a weekday and Rp30,000–75,000 at weekends or on holidays (2026 estimate), paid when you register at the base-camp post. Ojek to the trailhead adds Rp20,000–50,000.

What are the best hikes in Mount Merbabu National Park?

Thekelan (Kopeng) is the most popular, 5–7 hours up with the best-known landmarks. Wekas is shorter but steeper at 6–7 hours. Selo takes about 8 hours and has the finest meadow descent but no water or shelter. Suwanting near Ketep Pass takes about 7.5 hours.

When is the best time to visit Mount Merbabu National Park?

May to September, the dry season, gives the clearest mornings and the safest trails. Avoid January to March, when rain, fog and mud make the climb risky and some routes close.

Do I need a guide or permit to climb Merbabu?

You must register and pay at the base-camp post before starting. A guide is not always required, but some periods ask for one or for a health check, so confirm at the post or with the park office in Boyolali.

Can I climb Merbabu in one day?

It is possible but hard: most people start at night, summit for sunrise and descend the same morning. An overnight at a post is easier and lets you rest.

How do I get to Mount Merbabu National Park?

Fly or train to Yogyakarta, Solo or Semarang, then bus to Magelang, Salatiga or Boyolali and a small bus to Kopeng or Selo. From there an ojek takes you to the trailhead. Total travel is roughly 2.5–4 hours from Yogyakarta.
