Glenveagh is a glacial valley in the Derryveagh Mountains of County Donegal, protected since 1984 as Ireland's third national park. A single 6.5 km lake, Lough Beagh, fills the floor of the glen; the 1870s baronial castle and its walled gardens sit at its southern end, and bare heather crags rise on both sides. Entry, parking and the gardens cost nothing — the only paid extras are the shuttle bus, the walkers' bus and the castle interior. The park holds a large red deer herd and a small re-established golden eagle population, and it is the cheapest full day out in Donegal.

From Letterkenny
N56 north to Termon, then R255 west signed for Dunlewey and the park, onto R251; Local Link bus 271 also runs to the park entrance.

What are the best hikes in Glenveagh National Park?
The easy one is the 3.5 km lakeside road from the car park to the castle, about 40 minutes each way. The viewpoint path starts 200 m before the castle and climbs to a ridge over the lough in 1–1.5 hours. For a longer day, take the weekend walkers' bus to the head of the glen at 10:00 and walk back down the valley on the way-marked trails, 2–4 hours.
When is the best time to visit Glenveagh National Park?
May and June for rhododendrons and the longest days, or September and October for quieter paths and autumn colour. July and August are the busiest, with coach groups at the castle. The castle and tearooms close outside the main season, so check dates if the castle is your reason for going.
Can I drive to Glenveagh Castle?
No. Cars stop at the visitor centre car park, which has an EV charge point. From there it is 3.5 km to the castle, a 40-minute walk, or €6 return on the shuttle bus.
Is there anywhere to stay or camp inside the park?
No. There is no accommodation in the park and camping is not permitted. Base yourself in Letterkenny, 24 km away, or in the villages along the R251 such as Church Hill and Dunlewey.
Can I see a golden eagle at Glenveagh?
Possibly, but not reliably. Eagles were reintroduced from 2001 and Ireland has only around 30 birds, so sightings are uncommon. Scan the crags from the viewpoint and the glen head, and keep quiet.
Do I need a permit to fish Lough Beagh?
Yes. Fishing is boat-only with no bank fishing, the season runs 15 July to 30 September, and you need a day permit bought online in advance. Brown trout, sea trout and the occasional salmon.
