Gotska Sandön is a whole island national park in the Baltic, about 40 km north of Gotland and roughly 85 km from the Swedish mainland: some 45 km² of sand, dunes and pine forest with about 30 km of beach, no harbour, no roads, no vehicles and no shops. It has been protected since 1909, one of Sweden's oldest national parks, and the only visitors are those who book the M/S Gotska Sandön through Sandöresor — the crossing runs mid-May to mid-September, up to four times a week, from Nynäshamn on the mainland or Fårösund in northern Gotland. Landing is on the beach, sometimes by dinghy, and everything you eat you carry with you. The reward is flat, quiet walking, grey seals at Säludden, a heavy spring bird passage and nights that belong to the lighthouse crew and whoever else made the boat.

Accessibility
- The island has no roads, vehicles or bicycles; all movement is on foot over sand and forest paths.
- The beach landing and the walk to the camp areas are not suitable for limited mobility or wheeled luggage.

How much does it cost to enter Gotska Sandön?
There is no separate park entrance fee. You pay for the crossing: 1,095 kr return from Nynäshamn or 895 kr from Fårösund, or 495 kr for a day trip. Overnight costs are extra — 30 kr per person per night with your own tent, 300 kr for a rental tent, hostel rooms from 500 kr and cabins from 700 kr.
What are the best hikes in Gotska Sandön?
The island is flat and path-light, so the walks are: the lighthouse and Fyrbyn circuit (1–2 h), the beach and dune circuit (2–4 h), the long walk south to the Kyrkudden church ruin, and the shore walk to Säludden for the seals. Take a map — there are few marked trails.
When is the best time to visit Gotska Sandön?
Mid-May to mid-September, when the ferry runs. May, June and September are the best balance of weather and quiet; July is warmest but cabins and tents sell out. Outside the ferry season the island is effectively closed to visitors.
Can I visit Gotska Sandön as a day trip?
Yes. Day trips cost 495 kr and run Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays from Nynäshamn in May–August (about 5 hours ashore) and from Fårösund in late August and early September (about 7 hours). They can only be booked within 7 days of departure, by phone or email.
Is there anywhere to buy food on Gotska Sandön?
No. There are no shops or kiosks. Bring all your food and drink; there is a communal kitchen at the hostel and camp area, and unlimited freshwater on the island. The ship's café is the last place to eat before you land.
Can I bring a car or bike to Gotska Sandön?
No. Motor vehicles and bicycles are not allowed. You walk everywhere, and luggage is moved from the landing beach to camp by tractor.
What happens if the weather delays the ferry?
It happens. Bring one more day of food than you plan to need; if departure is delayed by more than 24 hours, island staff provide food. If you came by your own boat, a storm may mean leaving in the middle of the night.
