Mungo National Park protects the dry bed of Lake Mungo and the Walls of China, a crescent of eroded lunettes on its south-eastern shore. The Willandra Lakes Region has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1983, listed for both its natural formations and its archaeology: Mungo Lady and Mungo Man, among the oldest modern human remains found outside Africa, were buried here tens of thousands of years ago. The park is jointly managed by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and the elders of the Ngyiampaa, Mutthi Mutthi and Southern Paakantyi people. It sits in the Lower Darling region of far western New South Wales, about 1,000 km west of Sydney and 110 km from Mildura, and the last stretch is unsealed.

How much does it cost to enter Mungo National Park?
Entry is free; there is no park entrance fee. The main cost is the guided Walls of China walk, about A$50 per adult and A$35 for concessions and children, plus fuel and about 2 h of gravel driving each way from Mildura.
What are the best hikes in Mungo National Park?
The walking here is short: the 100 m Red Top boardwalk beside the Walls, the boardwalks at the Walls of China viewing platform, the Mungo lookout path and the Zanci Pastoral Loop through the homestead ruins. The 70 km loop is a drive, not a hike.
When is the best time to visit Mungo National Park?
March to May and August to November: mild days, cold but manageable nights and dry roads. Summer days reach the mid-30s °C with little shade, and winter nights can fall near freezing.
Can I see the Walls of China without a tour?
You can see them from the viewing platform and the Red Top boardwalk, which is right beside them. Walking up to and onto the formations is only allowed on the official guided tour.
Do I need a 4WD to reach Mungo?
No, a normal car can manage the unsealed Arumpo Rd in dry conditions, but check that your rental agreement allows gravel roads. After heavy rain the roads close and a 4WD will not help.
Can I visit Mungo Lady and Mungo Man?
No. Both were returned to Country and reburied in an undisclosed location in 2022. The visitor centre explains their story and the archaeology of the Willandra Lakes.
