Old Oyo National Park
Go only as a guided day from Ibadan or Oyo town in the dry season (late Oct–early Apr): the ruins of Oyo-Ile and Agbaku Cave are the reason to come, and the park is remote with patchy phone signal. Skip if you have one spare day in Lagos — the drive is long each way (check).

- Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
- Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
- West Africa ↗Carry an original yellow fever vaccination certificate on any West African trip: several countries on the coast road demand it of every arrival, and the rest demand it after you have passed through a neighbour.
- West Africa ↗Cross land borders and drive between cities in daylight only; plan each crossing as a full travel day with cash for fees and passport copies for checkpoints.
- Nigeria ↗Check visa and entry rules for your passport with the Nigeria Immigration Service or a Nigerian mission; most visitors need a visa arranged before travel.
- Nigeria ↗Governments advise against all or all but essential travel to a number of Nigerian states; check your own government's advice for each state on your route.
- Nigeria ↗Check the yellow-fever vaccination certificate rules for Nigeria before you fly; carry the certificate with your passport.

Old Oyo National Park is the only Nigerian national park built around a ruined imperial capital: 2,512 km² of Guinea savanna, granite outcrops and river valleys in Oyo State, with a northern arm reaching into Kwara State, holding the earthworks, palace sites and market squares of Oyo-Ile, capital of the Oyo Empire from roughly the 16th to the 18th century. It grew out of two colonial forest reserves — Upper Ogun (1936) and Oyo-Ile (1941) — turned into game reserves in 1952 and later combined into a national park; the exact year of national-park status is check. The archaeology, not the wildlife, is the reason to come: the park lists 33-plus mammal species and 370-plus bird species, but the West African wild dog that once lived here is gone, and large animals are rarely seen. The camps at Akoto (Sepeteri) and Ibuya (Ogun River) are the places to sleep inside the park, and the drive from Ibadan is long each way (check).

Why go
- The only Nigerian national park that pairs wildlife with a ruined imperial capital: Oyo-Ile, seat of the Oyo Empire from roughly the 16th to the 18th century.
- Agbaku Cave and the old city wall give a Stone Age and Iron Age layer you can stand next to, not just read about.
- Dry-season game drives and birding: the park lists 33-plus mammal species and 370-plus bird species (check current sightings with the park).
- Two base camps — Akoto at Sepeteri and Ibuya on the Ogun River — put you inside the park rather than on its edge.

Time out
Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- The camps, museum and gate areas are reachable by car with short, level walks.
- The ruins walk, cave and granite hills involve rough ground and are not suitable for limited mobility; ask the park about vehicle access to viewpoints.
Visiting lightly
- Hire park guides and camp staff rather than outside operators, so the money stays with the park and host villages.
- Do not buy or accept artefacts from the Oyo-Ile site; leave pottery and ironwork where it lies.
- Take all plastic back to Ibadan or Oyo town; waste collection inside the park is limited.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Old Oyo National Park?
The entry fee is not published; Nigerian parks price by residency, so carry ID and confirm the current naira fee at the gate (check). Guided tours, chalets and camping are also priced on the spot — ask at the park office. Overnight backcountry permits are required but the fee is not published either.
What are the best hikes in Old Oyo National Park?
The Oyo-Ile archaeological walk past the old city wall, palace site and Agbaku Cave is the one to do; arrange a park guide at the gate or headquarters. For views, the granite outcrops in the central zone give short climbs. The park is remote with patchy phone signal, so do not walk off marked routes alone.
When is the best time to visit Old Oyo National Park?
The dry season, from late October to early April, when vegetation thins and tracks are passable. Month-by-month conditions are not published, so treat any finer timing as check. The wet months, roughly May to September, bring tall grass, mud and more mosquitoes.
Can I visit Old Oyo National Park as a day trip?
From Ibadan it is a long drive each way, so a day trip works only with an early start and a hired car; exact times are check. From Lagos it is much longer and is better done as an overnight at Akoto or Ibuya camp.
Do I need a guide or a permit?
Day entry needs no permit. Every overnight stay in the backcountry needs a permit, issued at the Oyo-Isokun headquarters; walk-ins are accepted only the day before or the day of the trip, up to one hour before the 16:00 close. Guides are arranged locally — confirm what is required when you book.
Is Old Oyo National Park safe for foreign visitors?
It is a remote park with patchy phone signal and long rural roads. Go with a park guide, travel by day, and check your government's advice for Oyo and Kwara states before you book, since advisories change.
