  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Los Angeles

The Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area is a free, non-contiguous patchwork of federal, state and conservancy land running through Los Angeles and Ventura counties, between the San Fernando and Conejo valleys to the north and Malibu and the Pacific Coast Highway to the south. There is no admission gate and no timed entry: you pay for parking at California State Parks lots and for camping, not to enter. The range is chaparral — sage, ceanothus and oak stands — cut by canyon roads and threaded by the Backbone Trail, roughly 105 km of ridgeline between Will Rogers State Historic Park in Pacific Palisades and Point Mugu State Park at the western end. Because the parcels are separate and trailheads sit along canyon roads, a car is the practical way in; most visitors walk one section rather than the whole route. Summer brings heat inland and the year's highest wildfire risk, winter storms can wash out trails and trigger mudslides on canyon roads, and June fog often sits on the coast until midday. Spring and November give the best mix of mild weather, green hills and clear air.

Safety

Heat on exposed ridges medium

Start before 9:00 in summer, carry more water than you think you need, and turn back if you are low.

Wildfire high

In summer and autumn check fire restrictions and red-flag warnings before setting out; have an escape route in mind.

Mudslides and washed-out trails medium

After heavy rain, drive canyon roads with care and expect some trails to be closed or unusable.

Rattlesnakes and ticks low

Long trousers in scrub, check yourself and pets afterwards, and give snakes room.

Mountain lion encounter low

Do not run; face the animal, make yourself look large, and back away slowly.

No facilities on trails medium

Fill water and use a toilet before you start; most trailheads have neither.

Accessibility

  • The King Gillette Ranch visitor centre and its grounds are reachable by car with level paths and accessible parking.
  • Malibu Creek State Park has a paved road section from the entrance that suits wheels and strollers for the first stretch.
  • Most ridge and canyon trails are steep, rocky and unshaded; not suitable for limited mobility.

Visiting lightly

  • Stay on marked trails — chaparral regrows slowly after fires and foot traffic kills it.
  • Do not pick wildflowers or move rocks; the ecosystem is small and fragmented.
  • Pack out all rubbish, including fruit peel, and keep food away from coyotes.
  • Use the state park shuttle or carpool where offered; canyon parking is the main pressure point.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to enter Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area?

Nothing. There is no admission fee on National Park Service land. You pay for parking at California State Parks lots (about $10–12 per vehicle, 2026 estimate) and for camping, which runs about $10 per person at hike-in sites and $35–45 per night at developed campgrounds.

What are the best hikes in Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area?

For a short, rewarding walk: Malibu Creek Trail to the Rock Pool and the old M*A*S*H set, about 8 km round trip. For a summit: Sandstone Peak, the range's high point. For a long day: the Backbone Trail, roughly 105 km end to end, usually walked in sections. Big Sycamore Canyon is the easy downhill option if you can arrange a pick-up at the coast.

When is the best time to visit Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area?

March to May and November are the best months: mild temperatures, green hills and usually clear air. July to September is hot inland and carries the highest wildfire risk. June brings coastal fog that often clears by midday.

Do I need a reservation or permit?

No permit for day hiking or for parking at NPS trailheads. You need a reservation for state campground nights and a permit for backcountry camping, which is allowed only in designated areas.

Can I get there without a car?

Not easily. The recreation area is a patchwork of separate parcels with no rail link, and trailheads sit along canyon roads and the Pacific Coast Highway. A car, or a rideshare to a specific trailhead, is the practical option.

Is the recreation area the same as a national park?

No. It is a national recreation area, managed by the National Park Service together with California State Parks and the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy. That mix is why some trailheads charge parking and others are free.
