Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici is Catalonia's only national park and the core of the Pyrenees' glacial lake country: nearly 200 lakes, granite and slate peaks up to 3,017 m at Besiberri Sud, and U-shaped valleys left by ice. It has two classic gateways — the flat, meandering Aigüestortes plain above Boí in the west, and Sant Maurici lake below the twin Encantats peaks above Espot in the east — plus quieter approaches from the Vall Fosca in the south and the Val d'Aran in the north. There is no entrance fee and no permit for day visits; what you pay for is transport, because cars stay in the entrance car parks and you continue on foot or by 4x4 taxi. That single rule shapes every plan: pick your side, get up early, and walk.
