  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Italy and Malta ↗The region's headline sights run on timed tickets that sell out: book the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum, the Uffizi, the Last Supper and Malta's Hypogeum before you fix train and hotel dates.
  • Italy and Malta ↗Budget for per-night city taxes in Italy (up to about €10 a person in Rome), Malta's per-night environmental contribution, and Venice's day-visitor fee on peak days; none are included in most online room prices.
  • Italy ↗Italy is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • Italy ↗Historic centres are ZTL limited-traffic zones: cameras fine any unauthorised car that enters, often months later through the hire company. Park outside and walk in.
  • Italy ↗Regional train tickets bought on paper must be validated in the machine on the platform before boarding; digital tickets carry a time and need no stamping.
  • Italy ↗Venice charges day-visitors an access fee on selected peak days; check the city's official site if you are not sleeping there.

Base
Calatafimi Segesta

Segesta is a single hill in western Sicily with two monuments that carry the visit: an unfinished Doric temple of about 430–420 BC, standing almost complete with its columns still unfluted, and a Greek theatre on the northern ridge looking out over the valley towards the Gulf of Castellammare. The ancient city was Elymian, not Greek, yet Greek art, language and architecture shaped it; it fought its neighbour Selinunte for generations, backed Athens in the Sicilian Expedition of 415–413 BC, passed to Carthage, then sided with Rome in the First Punic War and was rewarded with tax exemption on the strength of a claimed Trojan ancestry. The site was abandoned by around the 13th century after a brief Muslim reoccupation in the Norman period. Today the fenced park on Monte Barbaro is small — the two acropoleis and the saddle between them fit inside roughly a square kilometre — so the visit is a half day, not a hike: temple first, then the 20-minute climb or the €1.50 shuttle to the theatre. It sits just off the A29 between Palermo and Trapani with free parking, which is why a car or a booked tour decides whether Segesta is worth adding to your Sicily route at all.

Heat and exposure on the climb to the theatre medium

Start at 09:00 or after 15:30 in summer, carry water, wear a hat; take the shuttle if you feel unwell.

Wear shoes with grip; the paths between the acropoleis are rough and unlit.

Sparse bus returns medium

If you arrive by bus, confirm the return time on arrival and have a taxi number as backup.

Time out

Finding the local time zone…

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.

Accessibility

  • The temple terrace, ticket office, café and Antiquarium are reachable on firm paths from the car park.
  • The shuttle bus to the northern acropolis removes most of the climb, but the theatre and acropolis paths themselves are uneven and partly stepped.
  • No wheelchair route to the theatre; ask at the ticket office about current assistance (check).

Visiting lightly

  • Carry out all rubbish; bins on site are limited.
  • Do not book unofficial 'guides' at the car park; use the park's own staff or licensed operators.
  • Visit outside July–August to spread pressure on the paths and the small museum.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to enter Segesta?

Expect roughly €6–10 per adult in 2026, with the shuttle to the theatre about €1.50 extra one way. The park does not publish a single fixed price for every season, so check the official site or the ticket office before you travel.

What are the best hikes in Segesta?

There are no long trails. The two walks that matter are the 5-minute path from the entrance to the Doric temple and the 20-minute climb from the temple up to the Greek theatre on the northern acropolis. A full circuit of both acropoleis takes 1.5–2 hours at a relaxed pace.

When is the best time to visit Segesta?

April, May, early June and October: mild temperatures, dry paths and manageable crowds. In July and August arrive at the 09:00 opening or come after 15:30, and expect little shade on the climb.

Do I need a car to visit Segesta?

Practically, yes, or a booked tour. The site sits just off the A29 with free parking. Buses from Palermo towards Calatafimi Segesta stop nearby a few times a day, but return services are infrequent, and the nearest railway station at Alcamo Diramazione is not connected to the site.

How long should I spend at Segesta?

Two hours covers the temple, the Antiquarium and the theatre with the shuttle. Allow three hours if you walk up and explore both acropoleis.

Is Segesta open every day?

Yes, daily from 09:00, with closing times of about 17:00 in November–February, 17:30 in March and October, and 18:30 from April to September. Last admission is one hour before closing.
