Belair National Park

Go for a half day from Adelaide: train to Belair station (about 40 min), then the 6.5 km (4 mi) Waterfall Hike or the easy loop around Playford Lake; arrive before 10:00 on weekends, and skip it if you only have one day in the city.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Belair National Park is South Australia's oldest national park, gazetted in 1891 and now a state heritage area, sitting in the Adelaide foothills about 13 km south-east of the city centre. It is small — roughly 8 km² — and half of it is open woodland and planted forest rather than the rugged country of the Mount Lofty Ranges further east. That is the point: a suburban train stops at its north-west corner, so you can walk into the bush from a city platform in about 40 minutes. The park's best walk, the 6.5 km Waterfall Hike, reaches two lookouts on Workanda Creek and returns over a quiet ridge; everything else is short and flat around Playford Lake. Vehicle entry is charged at the gate, walkers and cyclists pay nothing, and the whole park shuts on declared total fire ban days in summer.

Time out

Finding the local time zone…

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.

Accessibility

  • The Playford Lake picnic area, toilets and the Wood Duck Dawdle circuit are flat and usable with a wheelchair or pram.
  • The Waterfall Hike and the ridge tracks are steep, uneven and not suitable for limited mobility.

Visiting lightly

  • Stay on marked tracks to protect orchids and the understory.
  • Keep dogs out and food sealed so wildlife does not become dependent on visitors.
  • Take the train to Belair station instead of driving when you can; the walk in starts at the park edge.
