Zingaro Nature Reserve protects a 7 km stretch of road-free limestone coast on the Capo San Vito peninsula in northwest Sicily, between Scopello and San Vito lo Capo. It was Sicily's first nature reserve, created in 1981 after a 1980 protest march stopped a coastal road, and it is managed by the Sicilian State Forestry Corps. Everything inside is reached on foot: a coastal trail links six pebbly coves, a mid-elevation route crosses terraces and the old hamlet of Borgo Cusenza, and the hardest path climbs to Monte Speziale at about 913 m. There are no shops, no bins and patchy phone signal, so the day is decided by which gate you start from, how early you arrive, and how much water you carry.

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- The southern visitor centre, naturalistic museum and the first stretch toward Cala Capreria are the most manageable, but surfaces are still gravel and rock.
- The coastal trail, the ridge routes and the Passo del Lupo trail are steep and rough; not suitable for limited mobility or pushchairs.

How much does it cost to enter Zingaro Nature Reserve?
Entry is a small on-site fee, typically €5–7 per person in 2026 (check the current rate). There is no advance booking for ordinary visits — pay at the ticket office at the Scopello or San Vito lo Capo entrance. Guided and school visits must be requested in advance through the official site.
What are the best hikes in Zingaro Nature Reserve?
For most visitors the 7 km Coastal Trail (Sentiero Costiero) between the two gates is the best walk, about 2 hours one way past six coves. The 7.5 km Central Trail and 8 km High Trail add the terraces and Borgo Cusenza. The 13 km Passo del Lupo Trail over Monte Speziale (913 m) is the hardest, 7–8 hours, and needs an early start.
When is the best time to visit Zingaro Nature Reserve?
April, May, October and November give dry trails, mild temperatures and thinner crowds. July and August are the worst combination of heat, no shade and full car parks — if you go then, be at the gate before 9:30 and carry at least 2 L of water per person.
Can I swim at the beaches inside the reserve?
Yes, at coves such as Cala Capreria, Cala dell'Uzzo and Cala Tonnarella dell'Uzzo, but all beaches are unmonitored, with pebbly or rocky entrances and sudden depth changes. There are no lifeguards, no facilities and no bins.
Is there anywhere to eat or sleep inside the reserve?
No. There are no restaurants or shops, so bring food and water and carry out all rubbish. Overnight stays are only in the primitive stone rifugi at Contrada Sughero, October–May, with advance authorisation and a €10 per person per night fee including entry. Most people sleep in Scopello or San Vito lo Capo.
Do I need a car to reach Zingaro?
A car is easiest: 10 minutes from Scopello to the southern gate, 20–25 minutes from San Vito lo Capo to the northern gate, 50–70 minutes from Trapani. Buses run toward Scopello and San Vito lo Capo, but you still need the last road section, and there is no train line.
