Know before you go

  • Fort George was begun by the French around 1706 and renamed Fort George by the British in 1763; it overlooks both the Carenage harbour and the open sea.
  • It is also the site where Prime Minister Maurice Bishop and others were killed on 19 October 1983, days before the US-led invasion; locals treat the place with care, so ask questions quietly and respectfully.
  • The climb is steep: take a taxi up (about EC$15–25, agree before you go) and walk down through the old streets.
  • Go late in the afternoon (16:00–17:30) for cooler air and better light; midday on the exposed walls is hot.
  • Some parts of the fort are used by the police and may be closed; follow signs and ask before photographing officers or buildings.
