Mérida sits at about 1,600 m in the Venezuelan Andes, 15 km from the country's highest peak, and is the base for cable-car rides, mountain hikes and adventure tours. The teleférico is the main draw and it closes often, so build slack into the plan. The city itself is a walkable grid of numbered calles and avenidas, with cheap posadas around Plaza Las Heroínas.

Getting around

The centre is a numbered grid and easy on foot; Plaza Bolívar is the reference point. Busetas run almost everywhere and many stop on Avenida 25 between Calles 2/3. Taxis are cheap by US standards; agree the fare first. The bus terminal is a few km out of the centre, with a buseta across the street.

Safety

Mérida is calmer than Caracas, but Venezuela's general advice applies: check your government's travel advice, keep a low profile, carry small US dollar notes, avoid unlit streets at night, and treat 911 as unreliable.
  • Altitude: the city is around 1,600 m and Pico Espejo is 4,765 m. Acclimatise a day before climbing; watch for headache and nausea.
  • The teleférico closes for maintenance and stops running in the early afternoon: check before you build a day around it.
  • Upward cable-car tickets can sell out days ahead in high season; going down by mule or jeep and reversing the trip is the usual workaround.
  • Afternoon cloud and fog are normal on the Andean roads: drive the Valera route in the morning.
  • Cash: carry US dollars in small notes and bolívares; card and ATM access is unreliable.
  • Read your own government's travel advice for Venezuela before booking anything.
