  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Chaco Culture National Historical Park protects the densest cluster of ancestral Puebloan great houses in the US Southwest, built and occupied roughly 850–1250 AD and linked by a road network that still shows on the ground. Pueblo Bonito is the largest and the UNESCO-listed centrepiece. The park sits inside the Navajo Nation in northwest New Mexico, at about 1,890 m, and is reached only by car — the last stretch is unpaved and slow. There is no food service, no fuel and no lodging in the park; Gallo Campground is the only place to sleep inside it.

Why go

  • The largest and best-preserved great houses in the Southwest, with walls standing several storeys high.
  • A road network built by the Chacoans that survives as linear features across the mesa top.
  • One of the darkest night skies in the lower 48, with a park observatory and summer star parties.
  • Interpretation that names the builders as Ancestral Puebloans, not 'Anasazi' — the term Pueblo communities prefer.

Where to stay

In the park

Gallo Campground

Rudimentary sites in a side canyon; flush toilets, no potable water, no hookups, vehicles under 30 ft.

Near the park

Farmington and Bloomfield

The nearest full range of motels, about 60 mi north.

Near the park

Grants and Gallup

I-40 towns with motels and food, south of the park.

Safety

Dirt-road conditions high

Call the visitor center for current road status before leaving pavement. After rain the road can be impassable; the southern routes via NM 9 need high clearance and are not for RVs.

Monsoon storms high

June–October, hike in the morning and be off exposed routes by early afternoon. Flash floods run through washes and lightning strikes the mesa tops.

Heat and altitude medium

The canyon floor is about 1,890 m. Carry more water than you think you need; there is no potable water except what you bring or buy at the visitor center.

Remote driving medium

Fill the tank in Farmington, Bloomfield, Nageezi, Crownpoint or Thoreau. Watch for sheep and livestock on the road, and for drunk drivers on weekend nights near the reservation.

No phone signal medium

Tell someone your route and expected return time; the nearest help is about 20 mi away on the southern routes.

Time out

Finding the local time zone…

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.

Accessibility

  • The visitor center, the Pueblo Bonito trail and parts of the loop-road sites are wheelchair-accessible; ask at the desk for the current list.
  • One campsite at Gallo is accessible.
  • The backcountry trails and mesa-top routes are rough, unshaded and not suitable for limited mobility.

Visiting lightly

  • Stay on trails: the soil crust and archaeological deposits off-route do not recover.
  • Carry out all rubbish; there are no bins in the backcountry and no food service to fall back on.
  • Buy water and supplies in the gateway towns so the park stays a day-use destination rather than a service hub.
  • Attend the ranger night-sky program instead of using bright lights around the campground.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to enter Chaco Culture National Historical Park?

About $25 per private vehicle for 7 days, $20 per motorcycle and $15 per person arriving on foot or by bicycle (2026 estimate; check current rates). The America the Beautiful annual pass at $80 covers entrance. Camping at Gallo is a separate fee, about $15 per site per night.

What are the best hikes in Chaco Culture National Historical Park?

For most visitors the Pueblo Bonito loop (1–1.5 h, easy) is the one to do first. The Peñasco Blanco trail (about 7 mi return, 3–4 h) is the most interesting backcountry walk, and Pueblo Alto gives the best view of the canyon and the Chacoan roads. All four backcountry trails need a free permit and close at sundown.

When is the best time to visit Chaco Culture National Historical Park?

April, May, September and October: mild days, clear skies and the dirt access road at its most reliable. July and August bring monsoon storms and flash-flood risk; December to February can see snow that makes the road unsafe for a standard car.

Can I visit Chaco without a 4WD?

Yes, in dry conditions. The NPS-recommended route from US 550 near Nageezi is about 8 mi paved and 13 mi of rough dirt, passable in a sedan if you keep off the sandy shoulders. The southern routes via NM 9 are for high-clearance vehicles only and are not recommended for RVs.

Is there food, fuel or lodging in the park?

No. There is no food service and no fuel in the park; the visitor center sells bottled water and has a small gift shop and book store. The only place to sleep inside the park is Gallo Campground, first-come, first-served, with no potable water and a 30 ft vehicle limit.

Why is it called Chaco Culture and not Chaco Canyon?

The park protects the wider Chacoan system — great houses, great kivas, road alignments and outlier sites — not just the canyon itself. Pueblo communities ask that the builders be called Ancestral Puebloans rather than 'Anasazi', and the great houses be called ancestral pueblos rather than ruins.
