- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
- Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
- Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Grand Beach is a provincial park on the west shore of Lake Winnipeg in Manitoba, about 80 km north of Winnipeg by PTH 59 and PTH 12. It was established in 1961 on the site of a railway resort that drew day-trippers from the city by excursion train from the early 1900s until the tracks came up in 1963. What remains is the reason people still drive up: kilometres of fine white sand, dunes up to about 12 m high, a boardwalk with archival interpretive signs, roughly 30 km of backcountry forest and dune trails, and a large wooded campground. The beach is also nesting habitat for the endangered piping plover, fenced and guarded each June. There is no gate ticket in most seasons, so the decision is not whether to pay but when to arrive: before 10:00 on a hot July or August weekend, or on a warm day in late June or September when the sand is emptier.

Why go
- One of the best white-sand lake beaches in the Canadian Prairies, on the west shore of Lake Winnipeg.
- Dunes up to about 12 m high behind the beach, with a boardwalk and interpretive signs on the 1920s–1940s railway resort.
- Almost 30 km (19 mi) of backcountry trails and a 3 km (1.9 mi) beach walk, so a non-swimmer still has a full day.Almost 19 mi (30 km) of backcountry trails and a 1.9 mi (3 km) beach walk, so a non-swimmer still has a full day.
- Piping plover nesting areas are fenced and guarded in June — a rare bird you can watch without disturbing it.

Park rules
- Channel
- Swimming and wading are prohibited between the east and west beaches because of dangerous currents; use the footbridge.
- Plover fencing
- Stay out of fenced beach areas during the nesting season; do not let dogs or children into the enclosure.
- Dogs
- Keep dogs leashed and off the marked swimming beach; check current park rules for the beach season.
- Fires
- Fires only in provided fire rings; use local firewood and check for fire bans before lighting anything.
- Litter and glass
- Pack out everything; broken glass on sand is the main reason beaches get closed to bare feet.

Time out
Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- The boardwalk and the main beach area are the flattest, easiest ground in the park and suit strollers and wheelchairs with assistance.
- Sand access to the water is soft and can be hard going for wheels; ask at the park office about the firmest route.
- Backcountry trails are uneven forest and dune paths, not suitable for limited mobility.
Visiting lightly
- Stay out of fenced plover areas — the beach is nesting habitat, not just recreation space.
- Do not move firewood between areas; it spreads pests into the surrounding forest.
- Take all rubbish out, including food scraps that draw gulls and bears.
- Use the footbridge instead of cutting across the channel, which erodes the banks.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Grand Beach Provincial Park?
In most seasons there is no gate ticket for Manitoba provincial parks, so entry is free and you pay only for camping, firewood or a fishing licence. Vehicle permit rules can change by park and season, so confirm on the Manitoba Parks site before you drive.
What are the best hikes in Grand Beach Provincial Park?
The boardwalk from the locomotive kiosk plus the 3 km beach walk is the easy classic. For something longer, the backcountry network offers roughly 30 km of linked forest and dune routes; wear long pants for poison ivy and carry repellent. In winter the same area becomes five signed ski loops.
When is the best time to visit Grand Beach Provincial Park?
Late June and September give warm days with thinner crowds. July and August are warmest for swimming but the busiest — arrive before 10:00 on a hot weekend or you may not find parking. June is also when piping plover nesting areas are fenced.
Can you swim at Grand Beach?
Yes, inside the marked areas on the east and west beaches. There are no lifeguards, though beach safety officers patrol at peak times. Swimming or wading in the channel between the beaches is prohibited because of dangerous currents.
How do I get to Grand Beach from Winnipeg?
Drive PTH 59 north about 80 km to the Grand Beach turnoff, then PTH 12 west about 6 km. Allow 1–1.5 hours each way; there is no practical public transport to the beach.
Is there camping in the park?
Yes — a large wooded campground at the east end with around 350 sites, roughly half with electricity. July and August weekends book out well in advance through the provincial reservation service.
What should I watch out for?
The channel currents first, then wind on the open lake, poison ivy and ticks on trails, and intense sun on the sand. Fenced plover areas are closed to people and dogs during nesting.
