De Hoge Veluwe is the one part of the Veluwe with a fence and a ticket: about 55 km² of heath, drift sand, pine and beech, north of Arnhem and east of Ede. Anton Kröller bought the estate in 1909 and built a hunting park; his wife Helene's art collection became the Kröller-Müller Museum, which holds the second-largest Van Gogh group after Amsterdam. Free white bicycles at the entrances make the park a half-day ride; the museum and the Berlage-designed St Hubert hunting lodge make it a full day. It is a non-profit foundation and the only Veluwe block that charges entry.

For a full day on foot, combine a heath and drift-sand route with the museum and a St Hubert lodge tour.
When is the best time to visit Hoge Veluwe National Park?
May, June and September: dry, long days, green or purple heath and thinner weekday crowds. Avoid sunny Dutch school-holiday weekends in July and August, when car parks fill by mid-morning. August and September bring the heath bloom and the biggest crowds; September and October bring the deer rut.
Do I need to book tickets in advance?
Not usually — you can buy at the gate — but booking online saves queueing on busy days. The St Hubert lodge tour and guided walks have limited places and should be arranged ahead, and the nature campsite takes no reservations at all.
Can I get there without a car?
Yes. Bus 9 runs from Arnhem Centraal to Schaarsbergen, and bus 105 from Arnhem to Otterlo Centrum connects with bus 106 or a 15-minute walk to the Otterlo gate. From Ede-Wageningen station, bus 108 reaches Hoenderloo. Once inside, the free white bikes cover the distances.
Is Hoge Veluwe the same as Veluwezoom?
No. De Hoge Veluwe is a fenced, ticketed park between Arnhem, Ede and Apeldoorn. Veluwezoom, north-east of Arnhem, is a separate free national park with its own heath and trails.
