Ravello sits 350 m above the Amalfi Coast, reached by a winding 20-minute bus ride or a steep stair path from Amalfi. It is small: two villa gardens, a cathedral and a square, done in half a day. Most travellers come up for the gardens and the summer concert season and sleep one night, or stay in Amalfi and day-trip. The town is quiet, expensive and almost entirely pedestrian.

Getting around

On foot only inside the town: everything is within a 15-minute walk, but the lanes are stepped and steep. SITA buses link Ravello with Amalfi (about 20–30 min) and run roughly hourly; they fill up in summer. Taxis wait near the main bus stop. Cars cannot enter the centre and parking is limited to one lot near the square.

Watch out

Safety

Ravello is a small, safe hill town; the real risks are the steep stepped lanes, summer heat and the last bus down to Amalfi. Keep bags zipped on crowded buses and watch your footing after rain.
  • Last bus down to Amalfi leaves in the early evening: check the SITA timetable or you will pay for a taxi.
  • Summer buses from Amalfi are often full; board at the Amalfi terminal, not midway.
  • Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo close at sunset; last entry is earlier than the closing time.
  • Steps and uneven lanes: not suitable for wheelchairs or heavy bags.
  • Many restaurants and hotels close November to March.
