- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
- Southwest ↗Most national parks here charge an entrance fee per vehicle; the nationwide annual pass pays off at three or more parks — check current prices.
- Southwest ↗Alcohol is banned on the Navajo Nation and in many pueblos; some Utah restaurants do not serve alcohol or coffee.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area is not a classic park with one gate and one trailhead. It is two reservoirs — Lake Mead behind Hoover Dam and Lake Mohave behind Davis Dam — plus 2,300 km² of desert, nine paved entrances and a lot of driving between them. Most visitors come from Las Vegas for a few hours: a swim, a boat, a walk on the Historic Railroad Trail. Come in winter and it becomes a place to sleep, hike and paddle for days.

Why go
- The Historic Railroad Trail runs through five old rail tunnels to a Hoover Dam viewpoint, and it is flat enough for almost anyone.
- Two big reservoirs mean swimming, kayaking and houseboating within an hour of the Las Vegas Strip.
- Winter here is mild and dry while most of the US is cold — a genuine snowbird season.
- Desert bighorn sheep, black-tailed jackrabbits and water birds are common along the shore roads.

Park rules

- Alcohol and boats
- Boating under the influence is enforced; designated drivers on the water.
- Fires
- Fires only in provided rings; fire restrictions tighten in summer.

Time out
Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- The Historic Railroad Trail is wide, mostly flat gravel and usable with a sturdy wheelchair or mobility scooter; the tunnels are unlit.
- Boulder Beach, the visitor centre and most marinas have paved parking and accessible restrooms.
- Boat tours and some marina facilities can accommodate wheelchairs; ask when booking.
Visiting lightly
- Refill water bottles at visitor centres instead of buying cases of plastic.
- Stay on marked roads and trails; desert soil and cryptobiotic crust recover very slowly.
- Respect low-water conditions: exposed shorelines are fragile and full of hazards.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Lake Mead National Recreation Area?
A private vehicle pass is about $25–30 and covers 7 days (2026 estimate). Motorcycles pay about $20–25 and walkers or cyclists about $10–15 each. The $80 America the Beautiful annual pass covers this park and most other federal fee areas for a year.
What are the best hikes in Lake Mead National Recreation Area?
The Historic Railroad Trail is the standout: about 12 km round trip, flat, through five tunnels to a Hoover Dam viewpoint. For something harder, the Black Canyon hot springs route along the Colorado River needs a kayak or a long rough walk. Most other trails are short desert paths with no shade.
When is the best time to visit Lake Mead National Recreation Area?
March, April, October and November. Days are mild, the water is usable and the light is clear. June to August is dangerously hot for hiking — 40°C and above — and July to September brings monsoon storms. Winter is quiet and cool, with cold nights.
Do I need a boat to enjoy the park?
No. The Historic Railroad Trail, Boulder Beach, the visitor centre and the scenic drives work without a boat. A boat or kayak opens up the coves, hot springs and quieter shorelines, but the park is worth a half day on foot.
Can I visit Lake Mead and Hoover Dam in one day?
Yes, and most people do. Park at Boulder Beach, walk or cycle the Historic Railroad Trail to the dam overlook, then drive to the dam itself. Allow 4–6 hours and start early in summer.
Is there public transport to Lake Mead?
No. There is no public transport serving the park; you need a car, or a tour bus from a Las Vegas resort. Once inside, paved roads reach all the main marinas and beaches.
