Sable Island is a 42 km crescent of sand 300 km southeast of Halifax, reachable only by air charter or your own boat. There are no trees, no shops, no cell service and no overnight stays for ordinary visitors; a Parks Canada station crew lives here year-round. The draw is the scale of the place: free-roaming horses, huge grey seal colonies, the Ipswich sparrow that breeds nowhere else, and the fog and storm history that gave it the name Graveyard of the Atlantic. Almost everyone who lands here does it as a same-day return flight in the June–October season.

What are the best hikes in Sable Island?
There is no trail network. The standard walk is the south beach from the landing area, plus a crossing toward the freshwater ponds and the former Lake Wallace area. All of it is soft sand and low vegetation, with no shade and no markers.
When is the best time to visit Sable Island?
The visitor season runs June to the end of October. Mid-to-late August through mid or late September gives the best chance of a successful charter flight. July is the foggiest month, and late autumn brings hurricane risk.
Can I stay overnight on Sable Island?
