Entering the park is free; pay only for cable cars, caves and parking. Ride the Jasná cable car to Chopok (2024 m) for a 10-minute summit, or walk the ridge from Chopok to Ďumbier in 1 h each way; come June–September, start before 8:00, and skip the cable car on windy days.

The Low Tatras run 93 km across central Slovakia between the Váh and Hron rivers, a lower, broader range than the High Tatras with roughly 1,200 m of height gain from valley floor to ridge. NAPANT protects the core: long grassy ridges, karst caves on the north side and the Jasná ski resort around Chopok. Most visitors ride a cable car up, walk a short stretch of ridge and ride down; the better day is the Ďumbier traverse, which needs no ticket and no guide.

Safety

Sudden thunderstorms on the ridge high

Start early, watch the sky, and be ready to descend fast; the ridge has no shelter.

Winter conditions and avalanches high

Carry winter kit and check the mountain rescue bulletin; fatal accidents in the range are mostly falls, heart problems and ski crashes.

Accessibility

  • Cable cars at Jasná give wheelchair users and limited-mobility visitors access to the Chopok area in season; check the lift company's current policy.
  • The Demänovská caves involve steps and uneven ground; the Freedom Cave tour is the easier of the two.
  • Valley roads and the main viewpoints along Demänovská dolina can be seen by car with short walks.

Visiting lightly

  • Take the train and bus to Liptovský Mikuláš or Brezno rather than driving the whole way.
  • Carry out all rubbish; huts have limited waste capacity.
  • Keep to marked trails on the ridge to protect the grass and chamois habitat.
  • Buy food and beds in the mountain huts so they stay open for walkers.

How much does it cost to enter Low Tatras?

Nothing. NAPANT has no entry gate or park fee. You pay for the Jasná cable car (about €25–40 return, 2026 estimate), cave tours (€4–34 depending on the cave and tour length, cash only) and parking in the valleys.

What are the best hikes in Low Tatras?

The Chopok to Ďumbier ridge walk is the classic short one, about an hour each way on a marked path. The full Donovaly to Telgárt traverse takes 1–5 days with hut nights. For an easy day, ride the cable car to Chopok and walk a few minutes to the summit.

When is the best time to visit Low Tatras?

June to September for hiking: long days, lifts running, dry ridge. July and August are warmest but bring afternoon thunderstorms. January and February are for skiing. November is the worst month, with lifts and huts closed.

Do I need a guide in Low Tatras?

No. Trails are waymarked and the ridge route is walked without guides. You only need to book cave tours, which are guided and run on a fixed schedule.

Can I do Low Tatras without a car?

Yes, with patience. Trains and buses reach Liptovský Mikuláš, Brezno and Ružomberok, and local buses serve the valley and some trailheads. The cable car base at Jasná is 20–30 minutes from Liptovský Mikuláš by bus or taxi.

Is Low Tatras better than the High Tatras?

Different, not better. The Low Tatras are lower, broader and quieter, with cheaper beds and a long ridge walk. The High Tatras are steeper and more dramatic, with more infrastructure and more people.
