Wapusk protects one of the world's largest known polar bear maternity denning areas, on the Hudson Bay Lowlands about 45 km south of Churchill. There are no roads, no trails in the usual sense and no independent access: everyone enters with a licensed operator by helicopter, boat, snowmobile, aircraft or dog team, or on a Tundra Buggy run from Churchill. Fewer than a hundred people visit in a typical year. If your goal is simply to see a polar bear, Churchill's coast and the Cape Churchill area deliver that with far less cost and planning; Wapusk is for travellers who want the denning country itself and accept the price.

How much does it cost to enter Wapusk National Park?
There is no gate fee, because there is no road entry and no self-guided access. Your cost is the licensed operator trip out of Churchill: roughly CAD 700–1,200 per person for a helicopter or Tundra Buggy day, and CAD 1,500–6,000 for a multi-day guided visit with lodging and meals (2026 estimates). A Parks Canada Discovery Pass does not cover those operator costs.
What are the best hikes in Wapusk National Park?
There are no marked hiking trails. Travel is guided and mostly by vehicle, aircraft, boat, snowmobile or dog team. The closest thing to a walking itinerary is camping at the Broad River or Owl River fenced compounds and exploring the surrounding tundra on foot with your guide, which means 2–5 days and a park office booking.
When is the best time to visit Wapusk National Park?
September to November for polar bears, with October and November giving the highest numbers near Cape Churchill as the bears wait for freeze-up. June to August suits tundra wildlife, caribou and nesting birds, but the ground is wet and insects are heavy. December to February is too cold for operator trips.
Can I visit Wapusk without a tour?
No. Access from Churchill or Gillam must be arranged with a licensed commercial operator, and Parks Canada keeps the list of licensed companies. Parks Canada staff, researchers and Indigenous elders travel under separate arrangements.
Is it worth it if I only want to see a polar bear?
Usually not. Churchill and the coast between the town and the park give bear sightings in October and November at a fraction of the cost. Choose Wapusk if you want the denning country and the empty Hudson Bay Lowlands themselves.
Where do I sleep near Wapusk National Park?
Inside the park, only in the two Parks Canada fenced compounds on the Broad and Owl rivers, booked through the park office. Otherwise you sleep in Churchill, the gateway town, and travel out with your operator each day.
