Sa Pa valley trek: Lao Chải and Tả VanSa Pa – Lao Chải – Tả Van (thung lũng Mường Hoa)

Walk it over two days with a guide from the villages, sleep in a Tả Van or Lao Chải homestay, and go September–November or March–May; in the wet season the descent to Lao Chải is a mud slide, so wear shoes with real lugs.

The Mường Hoa valley south-east of Sa Pa is the classic Vietnamese mountain walk: about 22 km over two days from the town at roughly 1,550 m down through terraced rice to the Black Hmong village of Lao Chải and the Giáy village of Tả Van near the valley floor at about 900 m. It is not wilderness. Paths run between houses and paddies, and a road runs along the valley below. The reason to stay overnight is that day-trippers leave by mid-afternoon and the second morning, towards Giàng Tả Chải and the Sử Pán bridge, is quieter and better. Since 1 July 2025 Sa Pa sits in the enlarged Lào Cai province, which absorbed Yên Bái (check how local offices and signs are now named).

Guide optional

Strongly recommended and, by several local reports, expected: Sa Pa authorities have pushed for foreign trekkers to go with a registered local guide, and some checkpoints ask. Enforcement varies (check before you set out). Hire a Hmong, Dao or Giáy guide through your homestay or a village cooperative, not a street seller who follows you from the square.

Practical

Permits, water, gear, risks and what it costs

Permit and guide

No permit needed

No trekking permit. A village or valley conservation ticket has been collected at checkpoints on the Lao Chải road (reports range from nothing to about ₫90,000 (≈ US$4) per person; check). Foreigners must be registered for the homestay night, which the homestay does from your passport.

Water and food

  • Carry 1.5–2 litres; small shops in Lao Chải and Tả Van sell bottled water and soft drinks.
  • Lunch on day 1 is usually rice, eggs, vegetables and tofu at a Lao Chải stop, often included in the guide's price.
  • Homestay dinner and breakfast are normally included; rice wine is offered, not compulsory.
  • Do not drink from streams; buffalo graze above most of them.

Gear

  • Trail shoes or boots with deep lugs; road trainers are useless on wet clay.
  • Rain jacket all year and a warm layer; nights in Tả Van drop to 5–10 °C in winter.
  • Light daypack; leave the big bag at your Sa Pa hotel.
  • Walking pole for the Lao Chải descent in the wet months.
  • Headtorch; village paths are unlit.
  • Cash in small notes for tickets, drinks and handicrafts.

Risks and what to do

Slips on the wet clay descent to Lao Chải high

Go slowly, use a pole or the guide's hand, and switch to the valley road in heavy rain.

Landslides and road closures in June–August medium

Check with the homestay the day before; avoid walking under fresh cuttings after rain.

Getting lost among terrace paths without a guide medium

Go with a local guide; if alone, use an offline map and stay on the main path.

Persistent selling by followers who then demand payment low

Agree the guide in advance; say no clearly and early to anyone else walking with you.

Cold and wet at night in winter low

Bring a dry base layer and socks in a bag; ask for an extra blanket.

Alternatives

Questions people ask

Can I do the trek without a guide?

Physically yes, the first day follows well-used paths. But local rules have leaned towards requiring a registered guide for foreigners and checkpoints sometimes ask (check). A village guide also pays the village directly and solves the homestay, lunch and car back.

Is one day enough?

For Lao Chải and Tả Van, yes. The overnight is worth it for the quiet evening, the Giáy village life and the second morning through Giàng Tả Chải.

How muddy does it get?

From June to August the clay on the descent is slick enough to put most walkers on their backside at least once. Good soles and a pole help; in heavy rain walk the valley road instead.

What is the carved rock field?

A scatter of large boulders in the valley bottom between Lao Chải and Tả Van, cut with old patterns and figures whose origin is still debated. It takes 15–20 minutes.

Can I go by train?

Yes. The night train from Hanoi reaches Lào Cai around dawn; a bus or taxi does the last hour up to Sa Pa.
