- Construction began in the 6th century BC and was not finished until Emperor Hadrian completed it in 131–132 AD, about 700 years later.
- Originally 104 columns; 15 survive standing, plus one that fell in an 1852 (≈ US$2,500) storm and still lies where it landed.
- Hadrian's Arch stands just outside the site, marking the old boundary between the ancient city and 'Hadrian's Athens'.
