Destination OS · A hill-top old centre, a market, beaches below
Praia
Praia is a morning-and-evening city: do the Plateau and its market before 11:00, use the afternoon for the beach at Prainha, and take a taxi between the Plateau and the lower districts — the hills and the traffic are the limit, not the distance.

- Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
- Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
- African islands ↗Sleep on the island you fly home from the night before your long-haul departure; inter-island flights and ferries in this region are cancelled or rescheduled often enough to break a same-day connection.
- African islands ↗In the Indian Ocean islands book flexible rates for December to March: a cyclone warning can shut airports, ferries and roads for two or three days.
- Cape Verde ↗Complete the EASE pre-registration and pay the airport security fee (TSA) on the official platform at least 5 days before arrival; from July 2026 arriving without it doubles the fee at the border (check your passport's visa rules there too).
- Cape Verde ↗Confirm ferries and inter-island flights the day before; sea conditions and schedules change at short notice.
- Cape Verde ↗Swim only on beaches known to be safe: Atlantic swell and currents are strong on most coasts, and lifeguards are rare outside Santa Maria.
- Santiago area ↗Confirm the Fogo ferry or flight the day before and keep a buffer day before your international flight.

Who it suits, the trade-offs and when to go
Overview
The city in one paragraph, who it fits, and how many days it takes.
Praia is the capital, on the south coast of Santiago. The old centre, the Plateau, sits on a flat-topped rise above the sea; the beaches, the newer districts and the airport road are below or beyond it, and the steps and slopes between them are what tire visitors. The trips that go wrong walk down and back up in the midday sun or leave bags and phones in the open. Four clusters cover a first visit; Cidade Velha is a half-day trip by taxi from one kept bed.

- Achada Santo António (newer district): Evening cluster: a newer residential and business district south-east of the Plateau; cafés and a few restaurants; nothing to visit.
- Sleep area Palmarejo: suits Families, older travellers, price band $$.
- Sleep area Plateau: suits Families, solo on a budget, price band $$.

Survive
Safety basics, the lines not to cross, and practical habits that save the day.
Safety
- Petty theft: keep phones and cash out of sight at the market and on quiet stairways.
- Sea: strong currents and waves on the south coast; swim only where locals do and the beach is calm.
- Sun: SPF and a hat between 11:00 and 16:00; carry water.
- Emergency: 112; save your hotel's and insurer's numbers too.
Red lines
- Ask before photographing people, especially at the market.
- Do not photograph the presidential palace or military sites.
Practical
- Toilets: cafés, hotels and the market hall.
- Tap water: ask your hotel; bottled water is the safer choice.
