Give it 2–3 hours: drive the one-way 3-mile tour road, walk the 2.8-mile nature trail to the river overlook, and go on a weekday morning in Mar–May or Oct–Nov to dodge heat and crowds.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Horseshoe Bend protects the Tallapoosa River bend where, on 27 March 1814, Andrew Jackson's force of about 3,300 broke a Red Stick Creek defensive line inside a log barricade; roughly 800 Creek warriors died. The park is small, quiet and free to enter, and it is a stop rather than a destination: most visitors pair it with Lake Martin or Cheaha State Park. The 3-mile one-way tour road and the 2.8-mile nature trail cover the whole story in half a day.

Why go
- Stand on the peninsula where the barricade line ran and the river closed the trap on three sides.
- A short, well-signed battlefield: tour road, exhibits and trail in one compact loop.
- Free entry, so it works as a half-day add-on to Lake Martin or Cheaha State Park.
- Quiet most weekdays — you may have the river overlook to yourself.

Time out
Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- The visitor center, tour road and several stops are reachable by car with short, level walks.
- The nature trail is rolling dirt with roots and no paving; not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers.
Visiting lightly
- Carry out everything you bring; there is no trail-side rubbish collection.
- Stay on marked ground so the earthworks and camp site are not worn away.
- Treat the site as a cemetery as well as a battlefield — the dead of both sides lie here.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Horseshoe Bend National Military Park?
Nothing. There is no entrance fee, and no reservation is needed to drive the tour road or walk the nature trail. If you plan to visit several federal sites on the same trip, compare an America the Beautiful annual pass (2026 estimate US$80) against paying individually.
What are the best hikes in Horseshoe Bend National Military Park?
There is one main walking route: the 2.8-mile nature trail, which loops through the battlefield and past a Creek camp site in about 1.5–2 hours. The 3-mile one-way tour road is the other option and can be driven or walked. Both are easy, with rolling ground rather than steep climbs.
When is the best time to visit Horseshoe Bend National Military Park?
March to May and October to November. Spring brings mild temperatures and the living-history event near the 27 March battle anniversary; autumn is dry and clear. July and August are the hardest months, with highs around 32°C and little shade on the trail.
How long do you need at Horseshoe Bend?
Two to three hours covers the visitor center, the 3-mile tour road and the 2.8-mile nature trail. Add an hour if you stop at every tour-road exhibit or launch a canoe.
Can you swim or fish in the Tallapoosa River at the park?
Fishing is allowed only at the boat ramp and only with an Alabama state fishing licence. There is no designated swimming area; the river is a working waterway with current.
Is Horseshoe Bend the same as the Horseshoe Bend in Arizona?
No. This is a national military park in Tallapoosa County, east-central Alabama, on the Tallapoosa River. The Arizona Horseshoe Bend is a meander of the Colorado River near Page, over 2,000 km away.
