  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Catoctin Mountain Park is a free, forested unit of the national park system on the eastern slope of Catoctin Mountain in Frederick County, Maryland, about 70 mi north of Washington, D.C. It was built as a recreation demonstration area in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, whose stone and timber work still shapes the visitor centre, trails and the Camp Misty Mount cabins. Camp David, the presidential retreat, sits inside the boundary and is closed to the public. There is no entrance fee and no timed entry: you drive in from Thurmont on Route 77, park at the visitor centre, and walk. The trail network runs about 25 mi, from short rock-and-view loops to Chimney Rock and Wolf Rock to longer ridge combinations; neighbouring Cunningham Falls State Park, with Maryland's tallest waterfall, is a separate park with its own fee. Crowds are a weekend and October problem, not a daily one.

Wear shoes with grip; avoid the rocks after rain or ice.

Summer heat and humidity medium

Start before 10:00, carry water; the ridge climbs are steady.

Thunderstorms medium

Leave the ridge when you hear thunder; the rocks are exposed.

Hunting seasons low

Wear bright colours in late autumn where hunting is permitted nearby (check).

How much daylight do you have?

computed for this spot

Time out

Finding the local time zone…

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.

Accessibility

  • The visitor centre, restrooms and some short paths are reachable by car with level access.
  • The Chimney Rock and Wolf Rock trails are rocky and steep; not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers.

Visiting lightly

  • Stay on the trail; the ridge soils erode quickly.
  • Carry out all rubbish; there are few bins on the trails.
  • Park in marked lots only; roadside parking damages the verges.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to enter Catoctin Mountain Park?

Nothing. There is no entrance fee; you drive in and park free at the visitor centre and trailheads. Camping at Owens Creek is about $20 per night and Camp Misty Mount cabins about $35–55 per night (check).

What are the best hikes in Catoctin Mountain Park?

The 2.5 mi loop to Chimney Rock and Wolf Rock from the visitor centre is the classic walk, with rocky steps and two ridge views. Hog Rock is the easier option, and the longer ridge combinations take 3–4 hours.

When is the best time to visit Catoctin Mountain Park?

May and October. May is green and comfortable; October has the foliage and the clearest views, but the parking lots fill by 11:00 on weekends. July and August are hot and humid, so start early.

Do I need a pass or reservation?

No pass and no reservation for day visits. Cabins at Camp Misty Mount must be booked ahead; Owens Creek campsites are first-come, first-served.

Can I visit Camp David?

No. Camp David is a working presidential retreat inside the park boundary and is closed to the public; do not approach the security areas.

How do I get there without a car?

It is difficult. There is no public transport into the park; most visitors drive from Washington, Baltimore or Frederick via Thurmont and Route 77.
