Jenolan is a limestone cave system in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney, dated to about 340 million years and part of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. Ten show caves are toured with guides, from the easy Imperial to the step-heavy Lucas and the crawling Plughole adventure route. Above ground there is a short valley walk around the Blue Lake, a heritage guesthouse and free bush tracks into the surrounding reserve. The reserve closed to the public after heavy rain in 2024 flooded buildings and caused landslips on the access road; reopening has been staged, so confirm current access before travelling.

Accessibility
- The precinct around Caves House, the Grand Arch and the Blue Lake paths are flat and reachable by car.
- Imperial Cave is the least strenuous tour; ask staff about step counts and handrails before booking.
- Lucas Cave and the adventure tours are not suitable for limited mobility or claustrophobia.
Visiting lightly
- Book one or two caves rather than all ten; group sizes are capped to limit humidity and damage inside.
- Do not touch or break formations, and never feed the wildlife around the lake.
- Take rubbish out with you; the valley has limited waste collection.
- Use the coach from Katoomba or share a car; parking in the valley is tight on long weekends.

There is no gate fee for the reserve. You pay per guided show cave: about A$42–55 per adult and A$27–37 concession in 2026, with family tickets available. Each ticket also includes the self-guided Nettle Cave walk, and a Jenolan Pass from an earlier tour gives half off most other show caves within a year. Parking is free.
What are the best hikes in Jenolan Caves?
Above ground, the Blue Lake and Jenolan River loop is the easy pick, 30–60 minutes on flat paths past the 1889 dam and the old hydro plant. Longer signed tracks climb to plateau lookouts and natural arches, and the Six Foot Track passes through the area. None of the bush tracks need a ticket, but phone signal is patchy, so carry water and a map.
When is the best time to visit Jenolan Caves?
March to May and October to November give mild walking weather and fewer crowds. Cave temperatures stay steady year-round, so the tours run in any season. Avoid Easter and New South Wales school holidays if you can, and note that the road into the valley is one-way uphill between 11:45 and 13:15 daily.
Do I need to book cave tours in advance?
You can turn up and join the next tour with space, but book ahead for Lucas Cave, the small-group caves and the Plughole adventure tour, and for any visit on a long weekend or in school holidays. The last day tour usually starts about 17:30, with night tours later.
Is Jenolan Caves open after the 2024 floods?
