Kongernes Nordsjælland National Park is a national park in the making on Zealand, north of Copenhagen: the law passed in 2008, but the boundary was only settled after years of local disagreement, so there is no gate, no ticket and no single entrance. What exists is a block of protected land between Hillerød, Helsingør, Frederiksværk and the north coast, dominated by Gribskov, Denmark's fourth-largest forest, with Esrum Sø — the country's largest lake by volume — on its eastern edge, the old royal deer park of Store Dyrehave to the south, and the coastal plantation and heath of Tisvilde Hegn to the north-west. The royal name comes from the three palaces of North Zealand — Kronborg, Fredensborg and Frederiksborg — which sit in their own towns outside the boundary; inside the park you find only low castle ruins, moats and the straight star-shaped rides laid out for the par force hunts. Because the park is open land crossed by public roads, cycle routes and a commuter railway, the practical question is not whether to enter but where to start: Gribskovbanen stops at Gribsø, Kagerup and Mårum put you inside the forest, bus 362 from Helsingør stops by the Esrum Møllegård nature centre, and marked cycle routes 32 and 33 run through and along the woods. Deer, buzzards and the occasional osprey or white-tailed eagle are the wildlife draw in a country that is otherwise farmed edge to edge.

Accessibility
- Forest roads and the Esrum Møllegård area are level and firm, suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs.
- Gribskovbanen stops (Gribsø, Kagerup, Mårum) put you on flat ground with no climb to the trail.
- The Troldeskoven walk is sandy and uneven; the Store Dyrehave rides are the easier alternative.
Visiting lightly
- Take the train to the trailhead; the Gribskovbanen and S-train network covers the whole park edge.
- Carry out everything you bring; bins are rare inside the forest.
- Keep to marked paths in spring so ground-nesting birds and young deer are not disturbed.
- Buy lunch in Esrum, Tisvildeleje or Gilleleje rather than driving out for supplies.

Nothing. There is no gate and no ticket; the park is open forest, lake shore and heath crossed by public roads and trails. You pay only for extras: canoe or kayak rental on Esrum Sø (from about 150 kr), ticketed exhibitions at Esrum Abbey, and your train fare.
What are the best hikes in Kongernes Nordsjælland National Park?
For an easy half day, walk from Gribsø or Kagerup station into Gribskov on marked forest paths, or follow the Esrum Sø shore to Esrum Møllegård. For something different, do the short sandy loop through Troldeskoven in Tisvilde Hegn, or the straight star-shaped rides of Store Dyrehave, where deer are common at dusk.
When is the best time to visit Kongernes Nordsjælland National Park?
May, June and September: long daylight, dry paths and far fewer people than in the July–August school holidays, when the north coast beaches and holiday towns fill up. October is good for autumn colour and deer activity; November to February is dark, damp and short.
Do I need a car to visit the park?
No. The Gribskovbanen train from Hillerød stops inside Gribskov at Gribsø, Kagerup and Mårum, and bus 362 from Helsingør stops by Esrum Møllegård. Marked cycle routes 32 and 33 run through and along the forest, and the whole park edge is reachable by bike from Hillerød or Helsingør.
Can I camp in the park?
Only at designated sites. There is free tent and shelter camping in Nyrup Hegn and Klosterris Hegn, plus small sites near Arresø and at Edens Have near Hellebæk, where some shelters need booking. Wild camping elsewhere in the forest is not allowed.
Are the royal castles part of the national park?
No. Kronborg in Helsingør, Fredensborg Slot and Frederiksborg Slot in Hillerød gave the park its name but sit in their own towns outside the boundary. Inside the park you find only low castle ruins such as Asserbo, Dronningholm, Gurre and Søborg.
