Gateway is the country's first urban national park, established in 1972, and it is not one place. It is four separate units spread across two states: Jamaica Bay in Queens and Brooklyn, Breezy Point on the Rockaway peninsula, the south shore of Staten Island, and Sandy Hook on a barrier peninsula in New Jersey. Entry to the park itself is free; you pay for parking at Sandy Hook and for the bridges and transit that get you there. Most visitors should treat it as a half-day add-on to a New York trip rather than a destination in its own right.

Accessibility

How much does it cost to enter Gateway National Recreation Area?
Nothing. There is no entrance fee at any of the four units. The costs are practical ones: about $10 per car to park at Sandy Hook in season, the Marine Parkway Bridge toll to reach Fort Tilden and Jacob Riis Park, and your subway, bus or ferry fare. Camping is the only bookable paid product.
What are the best hikes in Gateway National Recreation Area?
The Upland Trail at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge is the best short walk, about an hour on flat gravel. The Sandy Hook Multi-Use Path runs the length of the peninsula past Fort Hancock and the lighthouse. Fort Tilden to Jacob Riis Park is a sandy walk between old gun batteries and the ocean. Great Kills Park has easy paved shoreline paths on Staten Island.
When is the best time to visit Gateway National Recreation Area?
Late April to May and September to October. Spring brings the migration peak at Jamaica Bay and mild walking weather; autumn brings hawks, waterfowl and warm water with thinner crowds. July and August are hot and Sandy Hook parking fills by mid-morning on weekends.
Can I visit Gateway without a car?
Yes, for three of the four units. The A train and a walk reach Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge; the 2 or 5 train plus the Q35 bus reach Floyd Bennett Field, Fort Tilden and Riis Park; the Staten Island Ferry plus an S bus reaches Fort Wadsworth, Miller Field and Great Kills. Sandy Hook is the awkward one — the Seastreak ferry to Highlands plus the seasonal shuttle is the car-free route.
Is Gateway the same as a national park?
No. It is a national recreation area, a different NPS designation, and it is made up of four separate units in two states rather than one contiguous park. The America the Beautiful pass covers entry where fees apply, but Gateway itself charges no entrance fee.
How long do I need at Gateway?
Half a day per unit. Pick one: Jamaica Bay for birds, Sandy Hook for a beach day, Fort Wadsworth for harbor views and military history. Trying to see two units in one day means most of it goes on the Belt Parkway or the Staten Island Expressway.
Can I swim at Gateway?
Yes, at Jacob Riis Park and at Sandy Hook in season, where lifeguards are posted. These are Atlantic Ocean beaches with rip currents — swim between the flags. The Jamaica Bay side is a wildlife refuge and not a swimming area.
