Mercantour National Park protects the crystalline core of the Mercantour massif along the Italian border, from about 900 m in the valleys to the 3,143 m Gélas summit, with six road-end valleys — Vésubie, Tinée, Roya, Ubaye and the Haut-Verdon edges — each holding its own trailheads, villages and refuges. It was created in 1979 and, with the Italian Parco naturale Alpi Marittime across the border, forms one of the largest protected areas in the western Alps. There is no entrance fee: you pay for parking, seasonal buses and guides. The Vallée des Merveilles above Tende holds thousands of Bronze Age rock engravings and is entered only with an accredited guide in season, while the Musée des Merveilles in Tende explains them on a wet day. Wolves, ibex, chamois and griffon vultures live here, and the park is close enough to Nice that you can sleep on the Riviera and walk above the treeline the same morning.

How much does it cost to enter Mercantour National Park?

Nothing. French national parks have no entrance fee, so walking the signed trails is free. You pay for parking at some road ends, about €3 one way on the seasonal Randobus, roughly €15–30 per person for a guided Vallée des Merveilles visit, and €45–70 half board in a guarded refuge (2026 estimates).

What are the best hikes in Mercantour National Park?

Lac Nègre above Boréon is the classic half-day walk, about 600 m of climb to a glacial lake. The Vallée des Merveilles circuit from Tende is the two-day highlight, walked with a guide inside the engraving zone. Mont Mounier is the long alpine day, roughly 1,200 m of ascent and 9–12 km each way.

When is the best time to visit Mercantour National Park?

June, July and September. June has long days and flowers with a few snow patches left; July opens every trail but brings afternoon storms; September is clear, cool and much quieter. August is the busiest month and refuges fill. From November to April the high cols and most trails are snowbound.

Do I need a car to visit Mercantour National Park?

It helps, because the valleys are far apart and trailheads sit at the end of mountain roads. Without one, the seasonal Randobus from Nice reaches Saint-Martin-Vésubie, Isola and Valberg for about €3 one way, and the Nice–Tende train serves the Roya valley; both are limited to a few runs a day.

Can I see the Vallée des Merveilles engravings on my own?

No, not in season. The engraving zone is a protected area entered only with an accredited guide, usually booked in Tende. You can walk the wider valley on marked trails, and the Musée des Merveilles in Tende explains what you are looking at.

Where should I sleep near Mercantour National Park?

Villages on the edge of the park: Saint-Martin-Vésubie in the Vésubie valley, Isola and Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée in the Tinée, and Tende in the Roya. Inside the park, guarded refuges run by the French Alpine Club give dormitory beds and meals, but you must reserve ahead in summer.
