- Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
- Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
- Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
- Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
- Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
- Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
- Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Dharawal National Park protects the sandstone plateau and creek catchments of Dharawal country on the southern rim of the Sydney Basin, between Appin and the Illawarra escarpment. It was a water catchment from 1927, a nature reserve and state recreation area from 1996, and became a national park in 2012, with three residual state conservation areas left on the western and central edges where mining leases continue. Entry is free and there is no booking, but there is also no public transport, no camping, no shops and no ranger station: this is a half-day car trip from Wollongong, Campbelltown or south Sydney, built around short walks to freshwater pools and a small waterfall, plus a 15 km one-way cycling trail across the plateau.

Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Dharawal National Park?
Nothing. There is no entry fee and no parking charge at the Victoria Road or Maddens Falls trailheads. NSW does charge at some other parks, so a multi-parks annual pass only makes sense if you plan to visit those too.
What are the best hikes in Dharawal National Park?
For most visitors: Minerva Pool walking track (short return to a freshwater pool), Jingga walking track (about 2.8 km return to Jingga Pool) and Maddens Falls (2 km return to a lookout over a small waterfall). The O'Hares Creek lookout track is longer and less used, and the 10B cycling trail covers 15 km one way.

Can you swim at Dharawal National Park?
Yes, at Minerva Pool and Jingga Pool. They are natural freshwater pools on Dharawal country, so keep to the tracks, keep noise down and do not use soap. There are no lifeguards.
How do you get to Dharawal National Park?
By car. There is no train or bus to the gates. From Wollongong take Appin Road (B69) north then Victoria Road; from Sydney take the M5 and Appin Road south. Allow 1–1.5 hours from central Sydney.
