Go for a half-day from Cuernavaca: arrive at opening (about 09:00) to walk the hilltop before the midday heat, budget 2 hours on site, and carry 2 L of water — there is no café at the ruins.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Mexico ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Mexico's National Migration Institute (INM) or your nearest Mexican consulate; keep proof of your entry (stamp or digital record) until you leave.
  • Mexico ↗Security advice differs by state: some governments advise against travel to parts of several states. Check your own government's advice for each region on your route.
  • Mexico ↗Do not drink tap water; use bottled or filtered water and ice from reliable places.
  • Mexico ↗Foreign visitors to Quintana Roo (Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Bacalar, Holbox) pay the state VISITAX online at visitax.gob.mx only; lookalike sites add fees.

Xochicalco is a fortified hilltop city of the Epiclassic period (about 650–900 AD), built by the Olmeca-Xicalanca, a Maya-linked trading people from the Campeche area, and abandoned after roughly 250 years. Its levelled summit holds the Temple of the Feathered Serpent with sharp carved relief panels, three ballcourts, a palace group and an observatory chimney cut to catch the overhead sun around the summer solstice. INAH excavated and restored it over more than a century and opened the site museum in 1996; UNESCO inscribed the Archaeological Monuments Zone in 1999. It is the fourth most visited archaeological zone in Mexico, but it is a half-day walk on a small hill, not a trail park: two hours covers the circuit, and the practical base is Cuernavaca, 90 minutes by bus.

Why go

  • A fortified hilltop city of the Epiclassic period (about 650–900 AD), unlike the flat ceremonial centres of Teotihuacan or Chichén Itzá.
  • The Temple of the Feathered Serpent carries carved relief panels that are still sharp, with Maya-style gods and tribute scenes.
  • The observatory is a chimney cut into rock that catches a shaft of sunlight around the summer solstice — rare in Mesoamerica.
  • It is the fourth most visited archaeological site in Mexico, yet a half-day from Cuernavaca is enough and the site is rarely packed before 11:00.

Safety

Sunburn and heat medium

The hilltop has almost no shade. Bring sunblock, a hat and 2 L of water; in April, when highs reach about 35 °C (95 °F), start at opening.

Slippery stone in the rainy season medium

June–October the steps and terraces are wet and polished; wear shoes with grip and skip the lower circuit after heavy rain.

Falls on steep, rocky steps medium

The site involves constant climbing on uneven stone; use the handrails and take the descent slowly.

Altitude and dehydration low

The site sits around 1,900 m; pace yourself if you have just arrived in Mexico.

Time out

Finding the local time zone…

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.

Accessibility

  • The museum and the entrance area are reached by car from the car park (check step-free access).
  • The hilltop and ballcourt circuit is steep, rocky and stepped; not suitable for wheelchairs or limited mobility.
  • The upper levels are reached on foot (check whether any shuttle or lift operates).

Visiting lightly

  • Buy from the small shop at the site museum rather than from vendors outside the gate.
  • Carry out all rubbish; there are few bins on the hilltop.
  • Hire a local guide from the entrance so the ticket money stays in the villages around the zone.
  • Combine the visit with the Grutas de Cacahuamilpa on the same road to cut a separate car trip.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to enter Xochicalco?

Expect roughly MXN 95–110 per foreign adult in 2026, with a lower rate for Mexican nationals; the site museum is usually included or a small extra fee. Buy at the gate — no advance booking is needed for individuals.

What are the best hikes in Xochicalco?

There are no long trails: the site is a walk. The best route is the full circuit — hilltop plazas and the Temple of the Feathered Serpent, then down to the three ballcourts and the residential terraces, finishing at the museum. Allow about 2 hours and expect steep, rocky steps.

When is the best time to visit Xochicalco?

December to March: dry, clear and mild, with December the coolest month (14–28 °C). April is the hottest (18–35 °C) so start at opening. June to October is the rainy season with over 100 mm a month and slippery stone.

How do I get to Xochicalco without a car?

From Cuernavaca take the hourly Lasser bus from the Mibus terminal on Av. Adolfo López Mateos and ask for 'Las Ruinas' — it stops at the site entrance and takes about 90 minutes. From Mexico City, bus to Xochitepec from Taxqueña, then a taxi for the last 15 km.

How long do you need at Xochicalco?

About two hours covers the hilltop, the ballcourts and the museum at a steady pace. Add 45 minutes if you read every panel and want the museum properly.

Is Xochicalco worth visiting?

Yes if you are in Morelos or passing between Mexico City and Acapulco. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the fourth most visited archaeological zone in Mexico, and its fortified hilltop layout is unlike Teotihuacan or Chichén Itzá. It is not a substitute for Teotihuacan on a first trip.

Can you climb the pyramids at Xochicalco?

You can walk the plazas and many of the stepped platforms, but climbing on unrestored mounds and touching the carved reliefs is not allowed. The Temple of the Feathered Serpent is viewed from the surrounding platform.
