Padre Island National Seashore
Go for one full day with a vehicle: pay the US$10–25 entry, drive Park Road 22 to Malaquite, then walk or drive the beach south of mile 5 only with 4WD; skip the middle of summer days and the spring break weeks.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Padre Island National Seashore protects the longest remaining undeveloped barrier-island beach in the world — roughly 110 km (70 mi) of sand, dunes, grassland and tidal flats on the south Texas coast, reached by road from Corpus Christi. It is a driving park, not a hiking park: the beach itself is the trail, and the further south you go the fewer people you see. It is also the main US nesting beach for the Kemp's ridley sea turtle, the rarest sea turtle, which shapes when you can drive and what you can do in summer.

Time out
Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- The Malaquite visitor centre, boardwalk and picnic area are wheelchair accessible.
- A beach wheelchair may be available from the visitor centre; ask in advance.
- The south beach drive and primitive camping are not suitable for limited mobility.
Visiting lightly
- Pack out all rubbish; there is no collection on the beach.
- Keep lights off and stay back from nesting turtles and hatchlings.
- Drive below the high-tide line where possible to avoid crushing nests and vegetation.
- Use reusable water containers; drinking water is limited in the park.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Padre Island National Seashore?
In 2026 expect about US$25 per private vehicle for 7 days, or US$10–15 per person on foot or bike; a motorcycle is around US$20. The US$80 America the Beautiful annual pass covers this park and other federal fee areas. Rates change, so check the NPS site before you go.
What are the best hikes in Padre Island National Seashore?
There are no real mountain trails — the beach is the walk. The easiest is the flat sand at Malaquite Beach from the visitor centre. The long option is driving or walking the open beach south of mile 5, which needs 4WD past that point. Birders usually walk the Laguna Madre flats on marked pull-offs.
When is the best time to visit Padre Island National Seashore?
October to November and April to May give warm water, clear days and thin crowds. June and July are best for the Kemp's ridley hatchling releases but hot by midday. Avoid spring break weeks in March and watch hurricane forecasts from August to October.
Can I drive on the beach?
Yes, but not in front of Malaquite Visitor Center. North beach access is usually fine for 2WD. South of mile 5 the sand softens and 4WD or AWD is recommended; there is no towing service and phone signal is patchy.
Do I need a reservation to camp?
No reservations are taken. Malaquite campground is first come, first served, and primitive beach camping south of mile 5 is free with your entry permit. Space on the beach is almost always available unless high tides or storm closures shut it.
Can I see sea turtles?
Nesting runs roughly April to July and public hatchling releases are usually June to August, announced by the park at short notice. There is no booking; arrive early and keep your distance. Never touch a turtle or a nest.
