Carlsbad Caverns is a cave park first and a desert park second: one road in from White's City, one visitor centre, and a single timed-entry reservation that gates everything below ground. The Big Room is the headline — a paved 1.25-mile loop, near 55°F (13°C) all year — but the better half-day is walking down through the Natural Entrance and riding the elevator back up. Above ground the park is Chihuahuan Desert: thorny, shadeless, and best walked in the cool months. In summer the surface bakes at 38°C+ while the cave stays cold enough for a jacket, and the evening bat flight from the amphitheatre is the one thing here that costs nothing extra and needs no booking. Wild-cave tours into Lower Cave, Slaughter Canyon Cave and the rest are the reason to come back a second day.
