Canada eTA: who needs it and how to apply
Visa-exempt air travellers to Canada need an eTA before boarding: apply online, pay CAD 7, most approvals arrive within minutes but allow 72 hours. US citizens and most US green-card holders do not need one.

The short answer
>- If you fly to Canada and you do not need a visitor visa, you almost certainly need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA). It is a small online permission linked to your passport, not a visa, and it is checked by the airline before you board. Apply on the official Government of Canada site, pay CAD 7 (about USD 5), and most people get an answer within minutes. Allow up to 72 hours in case of checks.
>- Two groups are outside this: US citizens, who do not need an eTA, and travellers who need a visitor visa, for whom an eTA is not the right document. Everyone else in the visa-exempt list — UK, Australian, New Zealand, Irish, most EU and several Asian and Latin American passports — needs one for air travel. Passport lists change, so confirm your own passport before booking.
Do
- Apply before you buy non-refundable flights if your passport is close to expiry.
- One eTA per person, including infants and children.
Who it applies to
>- The eTA applies to visa-exempt travellers arriving by air. That covers most European passports, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan, Singapore and a long list of others. It also covers travellers who already hold a valid US visa and are flying to or from Canada, and US lawful permanent residents travelling by air on a green card rather than a US passport.
>- It does not apply to US citizens, who travel on their US passport without an eTA. It also does not apply to anyone who needs a Canadian visitor visa — those travellers apply for a visa instead, and an eTA will not be issued. If you are not sure which group you are in, check your passport against the official list before you pay for anything.

How to apply, step by step
>- Apply on the official Government of Canada eTA site. You need the passport you will travel on, a credit or debit card, and an email address. The form asks for your passport details, personal details, employment and a few background questions. It takes about 10–20 minutes. Do not use a commercial copycat site: they add a service fee for the same form.
>- After you submit and pay, you usually get an email within minutes. The eTA is electronic — there is no stamp or sticker. It is linked to your passport number, so you do not need to print anything, though a screenshot of the approval is handy if an airline desk asks. If your application goes to manual review, it can take up to 72 hours; apply at least three days before departure to be safe.
>- At the airport, check in as normal. The airline sees your eTA status when it scans your passport. At a Canadian port of entry, a border officer still decides whether you are admitted and for how long — an approved eTA is permission to travel to Canada, not a guarantee of entry.
| Step | What you do | Time and cost |

Cost, validity and timing
>- The fee is CAD 7 per person (about USD 5), paid by card at the time of application. There is no separate fee for children, but each traveller needs their own eTA, including infants. A family of four pays four fees.
>- An approved eTA is valid for up to five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first, and allows multiple entries for short visits. If you renew your passport before the eTA expires, the old eTA dies with the old passport number and you need a new one. The same applies if you legally change your name.
>- Processing is usually fast, but do not leave it to the airport. Airlines can refuse boarding if there is no valid eTA on file, and a manual review can take up to 72 hours. Apply a week ahead if your travel dates are fixed.
Watch out
- An eTA is not a visa and does not guarantee entry; a border officer decides at the port of entry.
- Only the official Government of Canada site issues a valid eTA — third-party sites charge extra for the same form.
Exceptions and edge cases
>- Land and sea crossings from the US do not require an eTA. If you drive or take a bus or train from the US into Canada, you show your passport or accepted travel document at the border instead. This is why a US road trip into Canada is simpler than a flight.
>- Some travellers can transit Canada without an eTA under specific programmes, and some nationalities have different rules depending on whether they hold a valid US visa. Diplomats, crew and some students have separate arrangements. If your situation is not a straightforward tourist flight, check the official rules for your exact case rather than relying on a general guide.
>- A criminal record, a previous refusal or an overstay can affect both the eTA and entry. In those cases the eTA may be refused and you may need a visa or a temporary resident permit. Declare what you are asked to declare; the eTA form includes background questions.
| Situation | eTA needed? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Flying from the UK or EU | Yes | Apply before booking (check) |
| Driving from the US | No | Passport at the land border (check) |
| Cruise or ferry from the US | No | Check the operator's document rules (check) |
| Transiting a Canadian airport | Usually yes | Some transit programmes differ (check) |
| New passport before old eTA expires | Yes, reapply | eTA is tied to the passport number (check) |
How it compares with other travel authorisations
>- Canada's eTA is one of the cheaper and faster schemes. The UK ETA and the US ESTA cost more, and the US ESTA is valid for two years rather than five. Australia's ETA is usually handled through an app or an agent, and New Zealand's NZeTA bundles a conservation levy on top of the application fee. All of them share the same logic: a pre-travel check tied to your passport, separate from a visa.
>- The practical difference is where you apply and how long approval takes. Canada and the US are online and near-instant for most applicants; the UK and New Zealand are similar. If you are doing a multi-country trip, apply for each authorisation separately and check the passport rules for every stop, including transits.
| Scheme | Typical cost | Validity | Apply |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canada eTA | CAD 7 (check) | Up to 5 years (check) | Official government site |
| US ESTA | USD 21 (check) | 2 years (check) | Official government site |
| UK ETA | GBP 16 (check) | 2 years (check) | Official government site |
| Australia ETA | AUD 20 (check) | 12 months (check) | App or agent |
| New Zealand NZeTA | NZD 17–23 plus levy (check) | 2 years (check) | App or website |

Questions people ask
Canada eTA: what is the short answer?
If you are a visa-exempt traveller flying to Canada, you need an eTA before boarding. Apply on the official Government of Canada site, pay CAD 7, and most approvals arrive within minutes. US citizens and most US green-card holders do not need one.
Who does it apply to?
Visa-exempt travellers arriving by air: most EU passports, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and others. It does not apply to US citizens or to travellers who need a Canadian visitor visa. Land and sea arrivals from the US do not need an eTA.
How much does it cost and how long does it take?
CAD 7 per person (about USD 5), 2026 estimate, paid by card. Most applications are approved within minutes, but allow up to 72 hours in case of manual review. Each traveller, including children, needs their own eTA.
How long is a Canada eTA valid?
Up to five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first, with multiple entries for short visits. If you get a new passport or change your name, the old eTA no longer matches and you need to apply again.
Do I need an eTA if I drive into Canada from the US?
No. The eTA is for air arrivals. If you cross by land or sea from the US, you show your passport or accepted travel document at the border instead. Check the current document rules before you travel.
Can I get a Canada eTA at the airport?
No. Apply online before you fly. Airlines check your eTA status at check-in and can refuse boarding without a valid one. Apply at least three days before departure, and a week ahead if your dates are fixed.
