- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Zion is a canyon you walk into rather than look down at: the North Fork of the Virgin River has cut a gorge with walls 600–900 m high, and the park's best-known trails start on the canyon floor. Zion Canyon itself is shuttle-only for most of the year, so the day is planned around bus stops, not parking. Two other sections — Kolob Canyons off I-15 and the remote Kolob Terrace road — see a fraction of the traffic and need a car.

Time out
Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- The Pa'rus Trail and Riverside Walk are paved and usable with a wheelchair or stroller.
- Zion shuttles are accessible and carry bikes and packs.
- The visitor centre, museum and lodge have accessible facilities; most other trails are rough or steep.
Visiting lightly
- Ride the shuttle instead of driving the canyon; it is the reason the road closes to cars.
- Pack out everything, including food scraps, from the Narrows and backcountry.
- Stay on rock or established trail in the Narrows to limit damage to river life.
- Refill bottles at the visitor centre rather than buying plastic.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Zion National Park?
A private vehicle pays about US$35 for seven days, a motorcycle about US$30 and a person arriving on foot or by bike about US$20 (2026 estimate). The US$80 America the Beautiful annual pass covers Zion and other federal sites for a year. Angels Landing adds a small per-person lottery fee.
What are the best hikes in Zion National Park?
Angels Landing (8 km, chains, permit) and the Narrows (river wading from the Temple of Sinawava) are the famous ones. For easier days, the Pa'rus Trail and Riverside Walk are paved; Canyon Overlook is a short, rocky walk with a big view; Kolob Canyons has quiet overlooks.
When is the best time to visit Zion National Park?
April–May and September–October for mild days and a running shuttle. July–August brings monsoon storms and flash-flood closures in the Narrows. November–March is cold and quiet, and private cars are allowed up Zion Canyon.
Do I need a permit for Angels Landing?
Yes. The chain section requires a permit from a seasonal lottery, with a day-before lottery as a second chance. Carry the permit and photo ID; rangers check at the trailhead.
Can I drive my own car through Zion Canyon?
Not from mid-March to the end of October — the scenic drive is shuttle-only, except for lodge guests with a red pass. In winter, private vehicles can drive the canyon road.
Where should I stay near Zion?
Springdale is at the south entrance and walkable to the shuttle. Watchman and South campgrounds and Zion Lodge are inside the park and book out months ahead. Hurricane, La Verkin and Virgin are cheaper, 30–45 minutes west.
