Alt Pirineu Natural Park is the largest protected area in Catalonia: about 80,000 hectares of Pyrenean valleys between Pallars Sobirà and Alt Urgell, holding the region's highest summit, Pica d'Estats (3,143 m), and Certascan, the biggest glacial lake on the southern Pyrenees slope. It was declared in 2003 after decades of campaigning, and it continues across the French border into the Ariège regional park and, to the south-east, to the Comapedrosa park in Andorra. There is no entry fee and no gate: you drive to a valley village such as Àreu, Tavascan or Esterri d'Àneu, park, and walk. The trade-off is logistics, not tickets — trailheads are 3.5–4.5 h by car from Barcelona, buses reach only the main valley towns, and the big routes need a full day and settled weather.

What are the best hikes in Alt Pirineu Natural Park?
Pica d'Estats (6–8 h from Àreu) for the highest summit in Catalonia, Certascan lake (5–6 h from Tavascan) for the largest glacial lake, and the easy Pla de Boavi wetlands walk (2–3 h).
When is the best time to visit Alt Pirineu Natural Park?
June to September for high routes, with September the quietest and clearest. May and October suit lower valley walks. Winter closes many high trails.
Do I need to book parking?
For the Àreu trailhead and the Boet forest track, book in advance during peak periods; spaces are limited.
Can I see a brown bear?
Only rarely, in the northernmost valleys, and it should never be sought out. The Brown bear house at Isil explains the species; it opens Aug–Oct (check).
How do I get there without a car?
Take the FGC train from Lleida to la Pobla de Segur, then a bus toward Sort, Llavorsí or Esterri d'Àneu; from there you need a local taxi or 4x4 to reach trailheads.
