Cumberland Gap is the notch in the Cumberland Mountains where the Wilderness Road crossed from Virginia into Kentucky, and where an estimated 200,000–300,000 settlers passed west between 1775 and 1810. The park protects 9,700 hectares across Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia, with about 137 km of trails, a cave, and a road to a 700 m overlook that shows all three states at once. It is a free, drive-in park: no entrance gate, no shuttle, no timed entry. Most visitors see it in three to four hours.
