South Luangwa is Zambia's flagship park: about 9,050 km² of mopane woodland and oxbow lagoons along a meandering river, with one of Africa's densest wildlife concentrations and low visitor numbers because it is hard to reach. It is also the birthplace of the walking safari — you are not allowed to walk the bush alone, but guided walks are the reason to come. Leopards, Thornicroft's giraffe and Crawshay's zebra are the signature sightings; the park is one of the few in the region that permits night drives.

When is the best time to visit South Luangwa National Park?
May to October is the dry season and the peak window; June to August is the most comfortable, with cool nights and good walking. September and October are the best months for game viewing because animals crowd the river, but they are very hot. January to April is the green season: many camps close, roads can be impassable, and rates drop — it is the best time for birds.
Can I self-drive in South Luangwa?
Yes, with a high-clearance 4WD and a park map from the gate. Signposting is patchy, you must be back before dark, and you cannot walk or drive at night without a licensed operator.
How do I get to South Luangwa?
Most visitors fly to Mfuwe (about 1 h 15 min from Lusaka) and take a lodge transfer, 30 min to the gate. By road it is 123 km from Chipata on the D791, roughly 2 h in the dry season and much slower in the rains.
Is South Luangwa good for a first safari?
Yes, if you want walking and low visitor numbers rather than big-camp comfort. It is harder to reach than Kruger or the Serengeti, which is exactly why the bush feels empty. Allow 3–5 nights to make the flights worthwhile.
