Tesso Nilo National Park protects one of the last large blocks of lowland rainforest on Sumatra, created in 2004 and expanded in 2007 to safeguard Sumatran tigers and Asian elephants. The park holds the world's highest recorded vascular plant diversity per plot, yet tourism infrastructure is minimal: a ranger station with basic lodging, an observation tower, and guided river boat trips or backcountry treks. Most visitors come on a day trip from Pekanbaru, 7–8 hours round-trip by motorbike, to see wildlife tracks and the canopy from the tower.
