Wind Cave National Park protects two things at once: one of the longest cave systems in the world below, and one of the last unploughed stretches of mixed-grass prairie above. The cave is famous for boxwork — thin calcite fins that form almost nowhere else — and for air that blows in or out of a fist-sized opening depending on the weather. The surface holds a free-roaming bison herd, prairie dog towns and a small wild population of black-footed ferrets. There is no entrance fee; the only ticket you buy is a ranger-led cave tour, and those sell out on summer afternoons.

- Skin oils stop calcite growth; this includes walls and low ceilings at the top of stairwells.
- Bison have right of way
- Stay in the vehicle around bison; they can outrun you and damage a car.

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- The visitor center, gift shop and elevator building are step-free.
- The Garden of Eden tour uses the elevator both ways and is the best option for limited mobility; ask staff about arrangements for visitors with special needs.
- Prairie trails are dirt and grass with roots and slopes; not suitable for wheelchairs.
Visiting lightly
- Stay on trail: the prairie crust and grasses recover slowly from foot traffic.
- Do not feed or approach wildlife, and keep food sealed so animals do not become dependent.
- Book only the cave tour you will actually take; no-shows waste a ranger's limited daily slots.
- Refill bottles at the visitor center rather than buying single-use plastic.

How much does it cost to enter Wind Cave National Park?
Nothing. There is no entrance fee for vehicles or passengers, unlike Badlands National Park nearby. You pay only for ranger-led cave tours, roughly $10–35 per adult depending on the tour (2026 estimate), with half price for children and some pass holders.
What are the best hikes in Wind Cave National Park?
The park is better known for its cave than its trails. Above ground, short prairie loops leave from near the visitor center and campground, and longer backcountry routes cross the grassland; all are free and none need a permit for day use. Expect grass, sun and bison rather than big views.
When is the best time to visit Wind Cave National Park?
May, June and September. Days are mild, the prairie is green or golden, and cave tours are easier to book than in July and August, when afternoons are hot and tours sell out. The cave itself stays near 12°C (53°F) all year, so bring a layer whatever the month.
Do I need a reservation for the cave tour?
In summer, yes — book online or by phone before you drive out, because tours are capped and the popular ones fill by midday. In the quiet months you can often buy a ticket at the visitor center on the day. The Wild Cave and Candlelight tours need advance reservations and have minimum ages.
How long does the cave tour take?
The Garden of Eden tour is about an hour, the Natural Entrance about 1¼ hours, the Fairgrounds about 1½ hours, the Candlelight about 2 hours and the Wild Cave tour about 4 hours. All of them involve stairs, and the last tours of the day leave mid-afternoon.
Can I see the cave without a tour?
No. The interior is entered only with a ranger. You can walk to the natural entrance from the visitor center or campground for free and watch the air move in or out, but entering it is both illegal and physically impossible for most people.
Is Wind Cave worth visiting if I have already seen Jewel Cave?
Yes, if you care about formations: Wind Cave holds most of the world's known boxwork, which Jewel Cave does not. If you only want one cave tour in the Black Hills, pick by what you want to see rather than by size.
