Fort Lytton is a 0.13 km² heritage park on the north bank of the Brisbane River mouth, wrapped around a coastal fort built in 1880 to guard the river approaches to Brisbane. It is the smallest park most visitors will ever tick off, and it is not a walking park: there is one flat, short loop through gun pits, barracks and a military museum, plus a guided tour into the underground rooms. Everything here is free, which makes it an easy add-on to a Port of Brisbane or Brisbane airport day rather than a destination in itself. The park opens only on Sundays and most public holidays, so the whole decision is which Sunday, and whether a reenactment day is worth the crowd.

How much does it cost to enter Fort Lytton National Park?
Nothing. Entry to the park, the fort and the military museum is free, and the guided tours are free too. Parking at the end of Lytton Road is free. There is no Queensland park permit to buy for this site.
What are the best hikes in Fort Lytton National Park?
There are no real hikes. The park is about 0.13 km² of flat grass and historic buildings, and the only walk is a 45–60 minute self-guided loop past the gun pits, ramparts and museum. The guided tour adds the underground submarine mining building and black powder rooms. For actual walking, use the Brisbane River or Wynnum foreshore paths nearby.
When is the best time to visit Fort Lytton National Park?
April to August, on a Sunday. Days are mild and dry, and the park only opens Sundays and most public holidays, 10:00–16:00. Arrive by 10:00 to join the first tour at 10:30. Avoid January and February afternoons for heat and humidity, and expect the largest crowds on gun-firing Sundays.
When are the gun-firing reenactments?
On the first Sunday of February, April, June, August, October and December. The fort also takes part in Brisbane Open House each October. These are the busiest days, so come early if you want a clear view.
Do I need to book a guided tour?
No for small groups. Tours run at 10:30, 11:30, 12:45 and 13:45 and you can join on the day. Larger groups should contact Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service beforehand.
Is Fort Lytton worth visiting if I only have a few hours in Brisbane?
Only if you are already heading to the port or airport side of the city. It is a 20–30 minute drive from the CBD, the visit takes about two hours, and the gates are shut on weekdays. Otherwise spend the time on the Brisbane River or in the city.
