Go for a half-day boat run from Frontera: hire a lancha at the Uyotot-Ja' centre (about MXN 1,000 per boat, 2 h) between November and April, when the wetlands are drier and the bird numbers peak; skip the long upstream routes in the September–October flood.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Mexico ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Mexico's National Migration Institute (INM) or your nearest Mexican consulate; keep proof of your entry (stamp or digital record) until you leave.
  • Mexico ↗Security advice differs by state: some governments advise against travel to parts of several states. Check your own government's advice for each region on your route.

Pantanos de Centla is the largest wetland in North America, where the Grijalva, Usumacinta and San Pedrito rivers braid into mangrove, marsh and low forest across roughly 3,000 km² of Tabasco. It is a UNESCO biosphere reserve and a Ramsar wetland, and it is a boat park, not a walking park: the trails are short boardwalks and interpretive paths, and everything else is reached by lancha. The gateway is Frontera, a river town on the Grijalva with the hotels, the bus station and the docks. Come for birds, mangroves and river light, not for a summit.

Why go

  • The biggest swamp in North America, and one of the few places where you can boat through mangrove canals for hours without seeing a road.
  • Around 230 bird species recorded, including the jabiru stork, the largest stork in Mexico.
  • The Uyotot-Ja' centre has a 20 m tower over the meeting point of three rivers, the spot called Tres Brazos.

Time out

Finding the local time zone…

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.

Accessibility

  • The Uyotot-Ja' centre, its halls, restaurant and tower base are reachable by car with short level walks.
  • Boarding a lancha and the mangrove trails involve steps, uneven boards and no railings; not suitable for limited mobility.

Visiting lightly

  • Hire local boats and guides in Frontera so the reserve's villages earn from conservation.
  • Do not buy wildlife, shells or live animals, and do not pay for manatee or monkey 'guarantees'.
  • Keep group sizes small on the narrow canals; wake from fast boats erodes the banks.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to enter Pantanos de Centla?

There is no separate park gate ticket in the usual sense; you pay for transport and the boat. A taxi from Frontera to the Uyotot-Ja' centre is about MXN 100–150, a combi about MXN 25–40, and a 2 h boat is about MXN 1,000–1,500 per boat, not per person (2026 estimate, check locally).

What are the best hikes in Pantanos de Centla?

This is a wetland, so walking is limited. The realistic options are the short interpretive trail at Punta Manglar among the mangroves and the paths around the Uyotot-Ja' centre and its tower. Everything else, including the San Juanito and Nueva Esperanza routes, is done by boat.

When is the best time to visit Pantanos de Centla?

November to April, in the dry season, when water levels drop, birds concentrate and the canals are easiest to navigate. September and October are the wettest and storm-prone months, and some routes may be closed.

How do I get to Pantanos de Centla?

Fly or bus to Villahermosa, take an ADO, ATS or Cardesa bus about 1 h to Frontera, then a taxi or combi 13 km up the Jonuta road to the Uyotot-Ja' centre. Boats can also be hired at the Tres Brazos dock in Frontera.

Can I see manatees or jaguars?

Both live in the reserve but sightings are rare and never guaranteed. Manatees stay in the rivers and lagoons, and jaguars and ocelots avoid boats. Treat any operator promising a close view with suspicion.

Is Pantanos de Centla safe for travellers?

The main risks are mosquito-borne disease and heat, not crime. Use DEET repellent, cover up, drink water, wear the life jacket on boats, and check river conditions in the wet season.
